Tennis enthusiast building interest on Williamses' success ? Brand ...

The success of Venus and Serena Williams in winning a gold medal in doubles tennis at the 2012 Olympics, and Serena?s recent Wimbledon championship prior to that, can?t hurt efforts to get more black kids involved in tennis, according to Durham tennis enthusiast Angela Allen.

?I think that it is good for young people to see people of different races and backgrounds succeeding,? Allen said. ?When you see someone that is similar to you in winning positions, it certainly helps you to believe that you can also achieve higher goals.?

Allen and Ingrid Jones, through Durham Parks and Recreation, spent several weeks this summer at Elmira Park teaching tennis to black children.

?I liked that we got to hit the ball on the first day, and we learned new things about tennis,? Hanna McCrimmon said

?I liked that there were enough instructors for the students to receive some individual training,? said Hanna?s mom, LaToya.

Hanna, 8, said she wants to keep playing tennis. Mom said she?d keep her on the courts as long as she?s interested.

?I did not play as a youth,? said Allen, a black woman who grew up in Durham. ?I have to say that it did not feel as though there were as many sports opportunities for girls. I am very happy that Durham Parks and Recreation provides this opportunity to the community.

?I have always enjoyed sports. My grandmother played tennis and she always wanted my sisters and (me) to play. After college, I started playing. I wanted to see why she loved it. I certainly understand now.?
