PUEBLO ? Colorado State University-Pueblo Provost Rick Kremenski has announced the hiring of Erich Matola as Chief Information Officer (CIO). He replaces Jennifer Torres, who has served as interim director of Information Technology Services since the retirement of David Niccoli in May of 2011.
The search committee, chaired by Rhonda Gonzales, dean of library services, narrowed a national candidate pool to two finalists, who interviewed on campus last week. He will begin his duties on October 15.
Reporting directly to the provost/vice president of academic affairs, the CIO is the principal administrator responsible for all information technology and related services that support teaching, student learning, research, administrative processes, outreach, and public service. The CIO serves as the information technology representative on numerous university committees, including the Academic Council and the statewide Colorado Higher Education CIO Council. This position exists to provide leadership, management, and operational oversight of the ITS environment.
Matola brings with him more than 10 years of CIO and director-level leadership experience at both public and private higher education institutions ? and 20+ years in the information technology field. Since 2009, Matola has provided leadership and vision for all technology issues for the University of Wisconsin--Platteville, a comprehensive public university, supporting more than 8,000 students and almost 500 full- time faculty and staff as chief information officer.?
?Erich has redesigned numerous help centers for greater efficiency and reduced turn-around time, improved network security to insure compliance with federal and state regulations, and implemented a new data center,? said Provost Rick Kreminski. ?He also has supported distance learning, upgraded telecommunications systems, made server management more efficient, led a campus wide project implementing business forecasting and predictive analysis products, and overseen instructional technology and network support.?
He served in a similar capacity at the University of Phoenix (northern California campus), Alliant International University in San Diego, Calif., and at New College of Florida, where he orchestrated all aspects of the year-long University of South Florida/new College of Florida split relative to data, voice, and Internet, as well as transitional technical and applications support. He also has experience as a Software Applications Development Project Manager.
He earned an associate?s degree in information management from the Community College of the Air Force, a bachelor?s degree in German from the University of Maryland, and two master?s degrees, one in education from Chapman University (CA) and one in systems management with an emphasis on information systems from the College of Notre Dame (CA).
