Google launching same-day delivery service for online shoppers ...

Internet search leader Google is taking another step beyond information retrieval into grocery delivery.

The new service, called Google Shopping Express, will initially provide same-day delivery of food and other products bought online by a small group of consumers in San Francisco and suburbs located south of the city. The company, based in Mountain View, Calif., didn't say how many people will be part of the test.

If the pilot program goes well, Google plans to expand delivery service to other markets.

"We hope this will help users explore the benefits of a local, same-day delivery service, and help us kick the tires on the new service," Google said in a Thursday statement.

The delivery service is part of Google's effort to increase consumer reliance on the Internet, so it will have more opportunities to show online ads, which generate most of its revenue.

Google has learned that the more time people spend online, the more likely they are to use its dominant search engine or one of its other popular services, like its YouTube video site or Gmail, that include advertising.

The delivery service also could spur merchants to buy more online ads if Google's same-day delivery service encourages consumers to do more of their shopping online. Having to wait days or, in some cases, more than a week for the delivery of online orders ranks among the biggest drawbacks to Internet shopping.

It's a problem that Amazon.com and eBay, which operate the largest e-commerce sites, already have been trying to solve by offering same-day service in some U.S. markets. Wal-Mart Stores, the world's largest retailer, also offers same-day delivery in five markets.

A mix of national, regional and neighborhood merchants are enlisting in Google Shopping Express. The best-known names on the list include Target and Walgreen. All the merchants in the Google program will sell certain items through a central website. Google has hired courier services to pick up the orders at the merchant stores and then deliver them to the customer's home or office.

Although the couriers will be working on a contract basis, they will be driving Google-branded vehicles and wearing company-issued uniforms.

It remains unclear whether Internet shopping and same-day delivery can be profitable. Online grocer Webvan collapsed in 2001, largely because it couldn't devise a pricing plan that would pay for the costs of same-day delivery without alienating shoppers unwilling to pay too much extra for the added convenience.

Google is still trying to figure out how much to charge for its same-day delivery service. For the six-month test period in the San Francisco area, consumers won't have to pay a surcharge. Google instead will receive a commission from participating merchants.

The expansion into same-day delivery comes at the same time that Google is preparing to close some of its older online services so it can devote more attention and money to other projects.

The realignment has irked some Google users. The biggest complaints have centered on Google Reader, which allows people to automatically receive headlines and links from their favorite sites, and iGoogle, which allows Web surfers to design a page consisting of the Google search engine surrounded set up other online features, such as local weather reports and stock market quotes.

Google Reader is scheduled to close in July and iGoogle will shut down in November.

MongoDB Gets Better Security, Text Search, Performance ... - InfoQ

MongoDB 2.4 was recently released with new features such as Text Search, hash-based sharding, better geo-spatial capabilities with GeoJSON support and several performance and tooling improvements. We also discussed with 10gen about what?s next on the roadmap.

Some of the key improvements are as follows ?

  • Text Search is introduced as a beta-feature, supporting stemming and tokenization in 15 languages
  • Hash-based sharding, for cases where data spread across any natural sharding key cannot be easily predicted
  • Geo-spatial indexes with GeoJSON support
  • Security Improvements ? new modular authentication system, integration with Kerberos, Role-based Access control
  • Several Performance improvements, significant ones for some specific scenarios such as Count or Aggregation
  • V8 as the default JavaScript engine in the mongo shell (replaces SpiderMonkey); leads to performance and concurrency improvements for JavaScript based actions
  • Additional metrics for monitoring cluster status

10gen also introduced an enterprise version of MongoDB along with the 2.4 release.?

We got in touch with Kelly Stirman, director of product marketing at 10gen, to know more about the new features and what to expect next.

Kelly explains why collection-level locks may not make sense for MongoDB ?

The improvements to lock yielding in 2.2 provide substantial benefits to write throughput by reducing lock contention. There was a good write up on this subject by David Mytton.

MongoDB 2.4 does not include any additional granularity of locks beyond the improvements provided in 2.0 and 2.2. We are considering document-level locks for 2.6. The lock yielding improvements were substantial enough that collection-level locks might not provide a major additional improvement, and so document-level locks may be the next step.

About when to use range-based sharding instead of the the new hash-based sharding -

When using range-based sharding, if your application requests data based on a shard key range, then those queries will be routed to the appropriate shards, which is typically just one shard, or perhaps a few shards. The same query in a system that has used hash-based sharding will route the request to a greater number of shards, perhaps all the shards. Ideally, queries are routed to a single shard or as few shards as possible as this scales better than routing all queries to all shards. So, if you understand your data and queries well, it is possible range-based sharding is the best option.

With MongoDB 2.4, Counts can be up to 20x faster, and the Aggregation Framework is 3 - 5 times faster on average. Kelly explains that the improved count performance relies on some improvements to traversing the B-trees in MongoDB ? low cardinality index-based counts are where you see the biggest improvements. The improvements to the Aggregation Framework are a reflection of many smaller changes in MongoDB internal implementation that add up to big benefits.

On what?s coming next in the enterprise features ?

MongoDB 2.4 makes some major steps forward in the areas of security and monitoring, but we have much more planned for future releases. We think of security along the dimensions of authentication, authorization, and auditing. Future releases of MongoDB will continue to focus in these areas, and we will continue to enhance the tooling we provide with MongoDB. MongoDB Monitoring Service (MMS) has been hugely popular in the MongoDB community with over 15,000 users and growing quickly. We will continue to invest in MMS and to provide both free, cloud-based tools as well as on-prem offerings as part of our Enterprise subscriptions.

You can read more about the new features in MongoDB 2.4 in the release notes?as well as the overview.??

Penguins win 15th straight; Crosby hurt

PITTSBURGH (AP) ? Despite losing their captain, the Pittsburgh Penguins found a way to finish the month unbeaten.

Pittsburgh, gearing for a run at the Stanley Cup, welcomed star forward Jarome Iginla to the lineup, but lost Sidney Crosby early in the first period after he was hit in the mouth with a puck.

Still, the Penguins managed to overcome the injury to Crosby on Saturday for their 15th straight victory as Matt Cooke and James Neal scored third-period goals during a 2-0 victory against the New York Islanders.

"It's very tough to see that happen to anybody on the ice, but this is your teammate and Sid's such a great player," Iginla said. "It's a very, very unfortunate play."

Tomas Vokoun made 35 saves as Pittsburgh moved within two wins of the NHL record of 17 straight victories set by Mario Lemieux and the 1992-93 Penguins.

"The shutout is nice, but preserving the winning streak is even better," Vokoun said. "It's been great."

It might be tough without Crosby.

Coach Dan Bylsma said Crosby lost several teeth and needed oral surgery. He did not know if Crosby would miss additional time and wasn't sure if the injury affected his jaw.

"I just know he had some issues with his teeth," Bylsma said. "Just from the replay I know that."

Crosby, with 15 goals and 56 points, has enjoyed a resurgence this season, leading Tampa Bay's Steven Stamkos by 10 points in the NHL scoring race.

Another head injury for Crosby, however, has to concern the Penguins.

Crosby has missed considerable time the past two years because of concussions. He was sidelined the final 41 games in 2011 and the Stanley Cup playoffs, and skipped most of the 2012 regular season as symptoms lingered.

"I think every time that type of thing happens to a player you think about it," Bylsma said.

Crosby skated off the ice with a towel covering his mouth after a slap shot by teammate Brooks Orpik deflected off a stick and hit the NHL scoring leader in the face. Crosby, who immediately fell to the ice and tossed his stick in the air, did not return.

"When you see the replay, he had no chance to move," Iginla said. "Guys were definitely checking to see how he was doing."

Pittsburgh went 15-0-0 in March, the first perfect month in league history. The Penguins also won a franchise best 12th straight at home.

The Penguins, with a win at home against Buffalo on Tuesday, will have a chance to tie the record of 17 straight wins the following night at Madison Square Garden against the Rangers.

"It's exciting for our team, exciting for the players," Neal said. "We want to keep the streak going."

Iginla, a six-time All-Star, was acquired by the Penguins from Calgary early Thursday and he arrived in Pittsburgh on Friday night. He was in the lineup a game earlier than originally anticipated.

The move for Iginla, who waived his no-trade clause to come to Pittsburgh, was the Penguins' third big deal in a week. Pittsburgh also obtained former Dallas Stars captain Brenden Morrow and defenseman Doug Murray from San Jose.

The record crowd at Consol Energy Center responded with a huge ovation when Iginla was announced as part of the starting lineup.

Iginla, who played right wing for most of his career in Calgary, skated the left side on a line with reigning NHL scoring champion Evgeni Malkin and Neal, an All-Star forward.

The excitement quickly turned to concern 1:28 into the game when Crosby left the ice.

Pittsburgh appeared stunned without its captain, and the Islanders took advantage, getting the first eight shots of the game, but came up empty against Vokoun.

Vokoun earned his second consecutive shutout. Vokoun who hasn't been scored on in more than 162 minutes, relieved injured starter Marc-Andre Fleury during a 1-0 victory Tuesday against Montreal.

Vokoun's biggest save came in the third period, stopping Islanders speedy forward Michael Grabner on a breakaway.

Cooke scored his sixth goal of the season at 8:10, picking up the rebound from defenseman Deryk Engelland's shot at the top of the crease, and firing a spinning shot behind Islanders goaltender Evgeni Nabokov.

"I went to the net and the puck hit me in the stomach," Cooke said. "I stayed with it, tried to settle it and get it on net."

Neal scored at 13:04, firing a wrist shot past Nabokov. It was his 18th goal.

The Islanders entered Saturday's game tied with the New York Rangers for eighth place in the Eastern Conference.

The Islanders, who handed Pittsburgh one of four losses on home ice, ended up losing for the third time during the Penguins' 15-game winning streak.

"They've proven they can play without Crosby or Malkin, so it's not so much that," Islanders forward John Tavares said. "It's more about us and executing and doing what we need to do to win hockey games."

The Penguins received the biggest boost from their penalty kill.

Chris Kunitz, the team's second-leading scorer, was assessed a five-minute major penalty and a game misconduct late in the second period for checking Islanders center Josh Bailey from behind.

Bailey initiated contact, but Kunitz got the better of the play, sending Bailey dangerously into the boards. Bailey did not return.

"I saw the hit, I'm not going to comment on the hit," Islanders coach Jack Capuano said. "Fortunately (Bailey) is OK, but obviously stiff."

The major penalty turned into a two-man advantage for the Islanders three minutes later when Orpik was whistled for tripping, but Pittsburgh successfully killed off both penalties.

"We had blocked shots, clears, we won some battles at the net," Bylsma said. "That's a long time to kill a 5-on-3 against a really good power play team."

"Every time we get a big kill, it's the loudest our crowd has been," Cooke said. "The crowd was intense and it definitely energized us."

NOTES: The Penguins have allowed nine goals in their past 11 games. ... Paul Martin will have surgery Sunday on a broken bone and will miss six weeks. The Penguins are already without Kris Letang, the NHL's leading scorer among defenseman, who is out seven to 10 days with a broken toe. ... Orpik appeared in his 621st career game, tying Ron Stackhouse for fifth on the team's games played list and first among defensemen.

Navy IDs SEAL killed in Ariz. parachuting accident

(AP) ? Brett D. Shadle always had wanted to be a member of the Navy's most elite special forces unit. A year after enlisting, he made it happen and went on to become a highly decorated member of the Navy's famed SEAL Team 6.

U.S. military officials confirmed Saturday that Shadle, a 31-year-old special warfare operator chief, died Thursday when he and another SEAL collided in midair during a parachute training exercise over the rugged desert of southern Arizona.

Shadle was taken to University of Arizona Medical Center in Tucson, where he was pronounced dead. The other SEAL ? an unidentified E-6 petty officer first class ? remained in stable condition Saturday at the Tucson hospital.

Military officials said the accident was under investigation. Shadle and a fellow SEAL were practicing "routine military free-fall training" when the accident occurred Thursday afternoon, said U.S. Special Operations Command spokesman Kenneth McGraw. The SEALs collided in midair and landed in separate areas.

Family members said Shadle, of Elizabethville, Pa., was stationed in Virginia. He was married and had a 2-year-old son and 4-year-old daughter.

His uncle, Donald Shadle, 67, of Elizabethville, expressed disbelief, saying his nephew had been on many overseas missions only to come back and get killed during a training exercise.

"He was always a good kid, and he always wanted to be a Navy SEAL and that's what he did," Donald Shadle said.

Shadle enlisted in the Navy in July 2000. The following year, he completed his SEAL training and was assigned to his first unit in early 2002.

Navy officials said Shadle had earned multiple Bronze Star medals with Valor and several service ribbons. While details about his deployments were secret, officials confirmed he had served in Afghanistan and Iraq.

The Navy's SEAL Team 6 gained international attention when it was revealed that members of the top secret unit had carried out a raid in Pakistan in 2011 in which Osama bin Laden was killed. Bin Laden became the most wanted man in the world after the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks that killed almost 3,000 people.

Team 6 was hit hard later that year when 22 SEALs from the special unit were killed when the helicopter they were riding in was apparently hit by an insurgent's rocket-propelled grenade in Afghanistan. None of those killed was part of the bin Laden raid, but their deaths marked the nation's single deadliest day of the decade-long war in Afghanistan.

Special Operations Command has a parachute testing and training facility at the Pinal Airpark northeast of Tucson, McGraw said. Training programs are operated there year-round.

Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer ordered flags lowered to half-staff until sundown Saturday.

"His death illustrates once again the daily risks our service members face at home and abroad, whether in combat or training," she said. "I ask that Arizonans join me in praying for Chief Shadle's friends, family and fellow service members, including the second SEAL injured during Thursday's tragic accident."

Hubble observes the hidden depths of Messier 77

Friday, March 29, 2013

Messier 77 is a galaxy in the constellation of Cetus, some 45 million light-years away from us. Also known as NGC 1068, it is one of the most famous and well-studied galaxies. It is a real star among galaxies, with more papers written about it than many other galaxies put together!

Despite its current fame and striking swirling appearance, the galaxy has been a victim of mistaken identity a couple of times; when it was initially discovered in 1780, the distinction between gas clouds and galaxies was not known, causing finder Pierre Mechain to miss its true nature and label it as a nebula. It was misclassified again when it was subsequently listed in the Messier Catalogue as a star cluster.

Now, however, it is firmly categorised as a barred spiral galaxy, with loosely wound arms and a relatively small central bulge. It is the closest and brightest example of a particular class of galaxies known as Seyfert galaxies -- galaxies that are full of hot, highly ionised gas that glows brightly, emitting intense radiation.

Strong radiation like this is known to come from the heart of Messier 77 -- caused by a very active black hole that is around 15 million times the mass of our Sun. Material is dragged towards this black hole and circles around it, heating up and glowing strongly. This region of a galaxy alone, although comparatively small, can be tens of thousands of times brighter than a typical galaxy.

Although no competition for the intense centre, Messier 77's spiral arms are also very bright regions. Dotted along each arm are knotty red clumps -- a signal that new stars are forming. These baby stars shine strongly, ionising nearby gas which then glows a deep red colour as seen in the image above. The dust lanes stretching across this image appear as a rusty, brown-red colour due to a phenomenon known as reddening; the dust absorbs more blue light than red light, enhancing its apparent redness.

Why the Obama Administration?s Novel Medicaid Idea Might Not Catch On

A few weeks ago, the Obama administration set out to entice Republican governors and state legislators to expand their Medicaid programs under the federal health reform law by floating a novel approach.

The option to use private health plans instead of the government program for low-income residents was very appealing in theory, intriguing politicians in Arkansas, Ohio, Tennessee, Texas, and other states.

But on Friday, the administration dampened that enthusiasm by laying out strict rules for the program that will interest only a few states.

?This does not make it look very appealing to states,? said Dennis Smith, a managing director at McKenna Long & Aldridge LLP, and a former George W. Bush administration Medicaid director and Health and Human Services secretary in Wisconsin. ?I?m disappointed that they passed up the opportunity.?

The details will reassure many Medicaid advocates, who were worried that the current administration would weaken long-standing protections of the entitlement program in exchange for Republican buy-in. But the rules also could discourage some on-the-fence states from pursuing a Medicaid expansion at all, leaving more Americans without health insurance after the health law?s biggest provisions kick in next year.

?There?s a multisided dynamic here,? said Matt Salo, the executive director of the Association of Medicaid Directors, who had anticipated that the new initiative could bring 10 or more additional states into the expansion. Now, he says, it will likely appeal to only a few.

Eight Republican governors have already said they will seek to expand their existing Medicaid programs, but many politicians who had ruled out such an option have been expressing interest in the private alternative.

The tension for the administration?between its desire to cover more people and its commitment to ensuring robust coverage for vulnerable populations?has been clear since Arkansas Gov. Mike Beebe, a Democrat, first announced that he had reached an agreement over a private Medicaid option in late February. HHS still has?not acknowledged any agreement, but Beebe told reporters that Secretary Kathleen Sebelius had agreed that the federal government would pay for Medicaid beneficiaries to buy the same private insurance plans that will be offered to higher-income residents.

For Republicans in the Arkansas Legislature?and politicians in many other states?the idea of offering private coverage instead of Medicaid was exciting. But there were many uncertainties in the plan. The private plans would have covered fewer benefits than Medicaid, and exposed beneficiaries to more out-of-pocket costs. Estimates from the Congressional Budget Office suggest that, on average, the private plans would cost 50 percent more than Medicaid plans, meaning a 10-year price tag in the tens of billions if enough states signed on.

With the document released Friday, HHS explained that it would only approve such a plan if it also included funding for the extra benefits, kept the usual, low Medicaid copayments, and could be shown to be cost-effective for the federal government, when compared to a traditional program. It also said that if states want to require private plans, instead of just offering them as an option, it will have to apply for a special waiver. That sets a high bar for the states to clear.

But Arkansas thinks it can still move forward. ?It is what we expected, and we?re glad to see it,? said Amy Webb, a spokeswoman for the state Department of Human Services.

Singer India.Arie laughs off skin-lightening talk

NEW YORK (AP) ? India.Arie is laughing off talk that she may have lightened her skin.

The R&B songstress is known for singing about being authentic and celebrating one's true self. But some accused India.Arie of lightening her skin when a publicity photo for her song "Cocoa Butter" released this week made it look as though she were several shades lighter than her dark brown complexion.

But India.Arie took to Twitter on Friday to deny the accusations, saying she has no desire to bleach her skin because she loves herself and her brown skin "more than ever." She also said that "magnificent lighting" is the cause for her "glow."

She added that she'd like to keep the conversation going, though, on the issue of racism and colorism in the black community.

Pope prays at Good Friday rite recalling Mideast

VATICAN CITY (AP) ? Pope Francis praised the "friendship of so many Muslim brothers" during the Good Friday procession that re-enacts Jesus Christ's crucifixion and this year was dedicated to the plight of Christians in the Middle East.

The nighttime Way of the Cross procession at Rome's Colosseum is one of the most dramatic rituals of Holy Week, when Christians commemorate the death and resurrection of Christ. With torches lighting the way, the faithful carried the cross to different stations where meditations and prayers were read out recalling the final hours of Christ's life.

This year, the meditations read out were composed by young Lebanese faithful. Many of the prayers referred to the plight of Mideast Christians and called for an end to "violent fundamentalism," terrorism and the "wars and violence which in our days devastate various countries in the Middle East."

Francis, who became pope just weeks ago, chose, however, to stress Christians' positive relations with Muslims in the region in his brief comments at the end of the ceremony.

He recalled Benedict XVI's 2012 visit to Lebanon when "we saw the beauty and the strong bond of communion joining Christians together in that land and the friendship of our Muslim brothers and sisters and so many others," he said. "That occasion was a sign to the Middle East and to the whole world: a sign of hope."

Before becoming pope, Francis was Cardinal Jorge Mario Bergoglio, and he long cultivated warm relations with Muslim leaders in his native Argentina.

Stephen Baldwin admits he failed to pay NY taxes

NEW CITY, N.Y. (AP) ? Stephen Baldwin, the youngest of four brothers in show business, said Friday he's looking forward to "clearing the wreckage of my past."

Step 1 will be coming up with $300,000 for the tax man.

Baldwin, 46, admitted in Rockland County Court that he failed to pay New York state income taxes for 2008, 2009 and 2010. Under a plea bargain, he gets to stay out of jail ? so he can make some money ? and can have his record wiped clean if he pays the taxes within a year.

His total bill in taxes, interest and penalties is $400,000, but state Supreme Court Justice Charles Apotheker said $100,000 had already been paid.

Baldwin, currently appearing on "All-Star Celebrity Apprentice," said he never intended to avoid paying taxes and got in trouble by trusting others.

"Unfortunately, I got some really bad suggestions and advice ... from lawyers and accountants," he said outside court.

Baldwin, who lives in Upper Grandview, said he believes he can meet the deadline, noting that his father was a schoolteacher who made $25,000 and raised six kids.

"I just look forward to getting the $300,000 paid in the next year," he said.

He said he's directing a movie starring his brother William and that other "faith-based opportunities" consistent with his principles are emerging. His lawyer said earlier this month that Baldwin would not be taking any roles like his starring turn as a professional thief with a short temper in the 1995 film "The Usual Suspects."

If he doesn't pay all the money within a year, the plea bargain provides for a five-year sentence of probation and repayment within that time.

Besides William, Baldwin's brothers Daniel and Alec ? the latter was a star of TV's "30 Rock" ? are also actors. Asked if he was getting any help from the family, Stephen Baldwin said: "Just support as family support. ... The responsibility lies ultimately with myself."

No sentencing date was set. Another court appearance is planned in June to see how repayment is going.

Rep. Bruce Braley Apologizes for '#TrailOfTears' Tweet

Rep. Don Young might not be the only member of Congress in need of some sensitivity training.

After the Ohio State Buckeyes beat the Arizona Wildcats Thursday night in the college basketball tournament with a tie-breaking 3-pointer from LaQuinton Ross with 2.1 seconds left on the clock, Rep. Bruce Braley, D-Iowa, tweeted: "It's official. Ohio State is the luckiest team in the tournament. #TrailOfTears."

That #TrailOfTears hashtag quickly drew a negative response on Twitter, prompting Braley to delete the tweet within an hour. It was archived, nevertheless.

Braley, who is serving his fourth term in the House, then attempted to clarify his intent with a tweet-pology in the wee hours of the morning, explaining that he was identifying with the pain of Iowa State fans who suffered defeat at the hands of Ohio State last week.

"The 'tears' I was referring to were the tears of [Iowa State] Cyclone fans. I have removed the tweet & apologize to anyone who was offended," Braley, 55, tweeted.

The Trail of Tears is the route thousands of Cherokee traveled by foot, horse, wagon or steamboat from 1838 to 1839 after the U.S. government forcefully removed them from Georgia, Alabama and Tennessee to live in Indian Territory, which later became Oklahoma.

The National Park Service says that hundreds of Cherokee died during the grueling trek, while thousands more perished after being displaced.

The Braley story was first reported by the Des Moines Register. Braley is hoping to replace Iowa's retiring Sen. Tom Harkin in the U.S. Senate.

Braley's comment comes amid the furor created by Alaska congressman Young's referring to Latinos as "wetbacks" in an interview with public radio station KRBD published Thursday.

Google Translate For Android Gets Offline Mode With Support For 50 Languages

google_translate_offline_frenchGoogle Translate is a very useful tool for when you are travelling internationally but sadly, that’s also the time when you are least likely to have an always-on connection to the Internet. Obviously, there are a number of offline translation apps available, but if you are partial to Google Translate and you use an Android phone, you’ll be happy to hear that the latest version of the Google Translate app for Android (2.3+) now lets you download offline language packages for about fifty languages. You can now simply select [Offline languages] in the app menu and see all the language packs available for download. You just need to download the language packs for the two languages you want to translate between and you are good to go. Google notes that these packs are “less comprehensive than their online equivalents,” but even a smaller dictionary is more useful than not having one at all. Google also offers a Translate app for iOS, but it’s not clear when (or if) this version will get an offline mode, too. While the offline mode is obviously the main feature in this new version, the app now also allows you to translate vertical text in Chinese, Japanese and Korean with your camera. Google added support for using camera input to translate texts last August and added basic support for translating Chinese, Japanese and Korean this way last December. This could be a killer feature for Google Glass, too, and it’d be a surprise if the Google Translate team wasn’t working on this already (especially given that Google Translate’s Josh Estelle is already a Glass user and that Translate has made some cameo appearances in Google’s Glass promo videos).

Hands-on with Katamari Damacy creator's crazy 16-button game controller (video)

DNP Special 16button controller gets demoed with Katamari Damacy's creator's new game

You don't often see a video game specifically designed for a 16-button bespoke controller and for a special one-time party, but that's exactly what Keita Takahashi has done with Tenya Wanya Teens. If that name sounds familiar, it's because Takahashi is responsible for the enormously popular game franchise that is Katamari Damacy along with cult favorite Noby Noby Boy. Teens is his first foray as an independent creator under Uvula, a studio he formed with his wife Asuka Sakai, and is a result of a collaboration with event organizers Wild Rumpus and video game website Venus Patrol. As for the party in question, it's one that is being held concurrently with the 2013 Game Developers Conference in San Francisco, which is where we saw the controllers and the game in action.

As you can see above, the controller looks a lot like a modified arcade stick. A hand-made effort by programmer George Buckenham, both boxes were built in about five days for around 200£ ($302.50) each. According to Buckenham, the easiest part was assembling the electronics; it was the plywood housing that took him awhile to master. As for the game, Tenya Wanya Teens is a highly whimsical affair that is described as "a coming-of-age tale about love, hygiene, monsters and finding discarded erotic magazines in the woods." Tasks include peeing in the shower, punching monsters and taking on grizzly bears.

Outsourcing Telemarketing Services for Win Solution

For many small and medium sized businesses, outsourcing telemarketing services is an important and necessary step. ?If you don?t have the manpower or resources to handle telemarketing in house, outsourcing your telemarketing can free you and your employees to focus on the important, day to day operations of your business. ?Outsourcing telemarketing services turns over that job to those people who specialize in it. ?Outsourcing can also save your business some money. ?It?s a win/win situation, right?

Well, it is a good option for many businesses. ?However, don?t overlook the fact that outsourcing does require some maintenance on your part. ?Outsourcing telemarketing services is not just a matter of hiring a company and walking away. ?You will have to do some follow-up work along the way.

In order to hold up your end of the bargain as the outsourcer, these are some of the things that you must do:

  1. Prepare job information list.
Provide the information that the telemarketing service needs to do its job. ?You will have to give them some basic information to get started with. ?Make sure that you give your name and contact number to the telemarketing service, even if you are just casually looking for information online. ?They are trying to develop new leads, just like you are.
  2. Tell them what you want.
The telemarketing service cannot give you what you want from them if you do not make your needs explicitly clear. ?The importance of this point cannot be stressed enough. ?If you expect results from your telemarketing service, you must equip them to do their job by clearly outlining and defining what you expect from them. ?If you are looking for an increase in revenue, specifically state the number that you are looking for. ?If you want the telemarketing service to make a certain number of calls per day, say so. ?If you want a certain number of representatives to be assigned to your account, let them know. ?The most critical step in determining your outcome is clearly stating your goals and objectives.
  3. Learn where to get access to your results.
Telemarketing services keep track of all sorts of statistics related to your campaign. ?They will prepare reports on things like total increase in revenue, number of calls made, the increase in sales by demographic, and sales by customer service representative. ?All the reports in the world don?t do you any good if you don?t know where or how to get them, though. ?Find out if the reports will be sent to you on a regular basis. Some companies give you access to their database so that you can check the reports whenever you wish. ?Whatever the system for relaying reports, you should know what you are signing up for.

When you outsource your telemarketing services, you can save a lot of time, stress and money. You just need to do a little bit of work at the outset and some periodic follow up. ?The clearer you are at the outset of your relationship, the better your results will be.

Let the expert team at Forlex Sales handle all of your outsourced telemarketing activities. Our team is highly trained to meet the needs of every business owner. National Secular Society - Leeds City Council under pressure from ...

Leeds City Council is coming under pressure over its plan to scrap free transport for pupils travelling to "faith schools".

A meeting was held this week at one of the schools affected, St Mary's Catholic Academy in Menston, where the headteacher called the plans "madness".

Parents packed the meeting to discuss the consultation. Council officers also attended to explain the reasons behind the proposals to stop free transport for 2600 pupils who attend faith schools.

The MP for LeedsNorth West, Greg Mulholland is also criticising the plans. He said: "I was shocked to hear Leeds City Council was considering cutting free home to school transport for pupils of faith schools who live closer to a mainstream school. This decision unfairly discriminates against parents wishing to send their children to faith schools and I urge the Council to reconsider."

In its consultation document Leeds City Council says the cost of providing statutory and discretionary school transport to families inLeedsis more than ?16 million per year. It tells parents: "Councils throughout the country are facing financial pressures on the services they provide. This means they must make choices about what they can continue to offer and how it is delivered.

"We do not have the option to keep children's transport expenditure at the current level; we have to do things differently."

Cold cities less sustainable than warm cities, research suggests

Mar. 26, 2013 ? Living in colder climates in the US is more energy demanding than living in warmer climates. This is according to Dr Michael Sivak at the University of Michigan, who has published new research today, 28 March, in IOP Publishing's journal Environmental Research Letters.

Dr Sivak has calculated that climate control in the coldest large metropolitan area in the country -- Minneapolis -- is about three-and-a-half times more energy demanding than in the warmest large metropolitan area -- Miami.

Dr Sivak calculated this difference in energy demand using three parameters: the number of heating or cooling degree days in each area; the efficiencies of heating and cooling appliances; and the efficiencies of power-generating plants.

Not included in the analysis were the energy used to extract fuels from the ground, the losses during energy transmission, and energy costs.

"It has been taken for a fact that living in the warm regions of the US is less sustainable than living in the cold regions, based partly on the perceived energy needs for climate control; however, the present findings suggest a re-examination of the relative sustainability of living in warm versus cold climates."

Heating degree days (HDDs) and cooling degree days (CDDs) are climatological measures that are designed to reflect the demand for energy needed to heat or cool a building. They are calculated by comparing the mean daily outdoor temperature with 18?C.

A day with a mean temperature of 10?C would have 8 HDDs and no CDDs, as the temperature is 8?C below 18?C. Analogously, a day with a mean temperature of 23?C would have 5 CDDs and no HDDs.

Based on a previous study, Dr Sivak showed that Minneapolis has 4376 heating degree days a year compared to 2423 cooling degree days in Miami.

In the study, Dr Sivak used a single measure for the efficiency of heating and cooling appliances, as most are currently rated using different measures so they cannot be directly compared. His calculations showed that a typical air conditioner is about four times more energy efficient than a typical furnace.

"In simple terms, it takes less energy to cool a room down by one degree than it does to heat it up by one degree," said Dr Sivak.

Grouping together climatology, the efficiency of heating and cooling appliances, and the efficiency of power-generating plants, Dr Sivak showed that Minneapolis was substantially more energy demanding than Miami.

"In the US, the energy consumption for air conditioning is of general concern but the required energy to heat is often taken for granted. Focus should also be turned to the opposite end of the scale -- living in cold climates such as in Minneapolis, Milwaukee, Rochester, Buffalo and Chicago is more energy demanding, and therefore less sustainable from this point of view, than living in warm climates such as in Miami, Phoenix, Tampa, Orlando and Las Vegas," Dr Sivak concluded.

The Towerlight ? New family, same Seder

Freshman Stephanie Lande has never spent Passover away from her family. However, since she?s from New York, Lande wasn?t able to return home to celebrate with her family this year.

?It?s a little hard because I?m not with family but at the same time it?s a new experience,? the occupational therapy major said.

Lande didn?t allow her distance from home stop her from celebrating Passover, a Jewish holiday composed of two dinners known as Seders during which members of the Jewish faith remember their ancestors? escape from Egypt.

?It?s a holiday in which you spend time with family and it?s hard not eating by their side but at the same time like you?re remembering what your ancestors and everyone else went through to get you the freedom that you currently have,? Lande said.

For first-time college students, observing Passover away from their families may seem intimidating, but Lande said this year she was able to celebrate with friends, friends whom she calls her ?second family.?

During the first Seder Monday, March 25, Lande went home with her friend, freshman Maggy Kay.

?It was good because it was a new experience and I felt very welcome, very comfortable there,? Lande said. ?Even though I wasn?t with my family, I felt personally welcome with her family.?

Kay, an elementary and special education major, said that she considers Passover a home-oriented holiday and welcomed Lande to her home.

?It is really a family holiday,? she said. ?You don?t really go to services.?

Though she went home for the first night of Seder, Kay said it would be too difficult to work around classes to go home on both nights.

?I think it will be different but I think it will be interesting to see how other people experience Seder,? Kay said.

Both Kay and Lande participated in Hillel?s observation of second Seder. They said that they feel Hillel, a college-campus- based Jewish organization, has become a support group for them.

About 10 percent of Towson?s student population is Jewish, according to Towson Hillel?s website, and Lande said new students should not be afraid to find friends with whom they can share events like Passover.

?If you want to join a group such as Shabbat or Hillel, you should because they?ll be your second family and they?ll always be there for you no matter what,? she said.

Report: Rep. Gohmert 'rude and irate' after ticket

WASHINGTON (AP) ? A Texas congressman was "rude and irate" after receiving a parking ticket near the Lincoln Memorial earlier this month, according to a police report.

Rep. Louie Gohmert, R-Texas, told U.S. Park Police he was on a committee that oversees the agency and would not pay a fine, according to the report, which was obtained by Politico. Gohmert was given a citation after 11 p.m. on March 13 for parking his vehicle in a spot reserved for National Park Service vehicles.

The outspoken conservative lawmaker referred officers to a congressional plate in his car window, according to the police report, and left without the ticket.

Kimberly Willingham, a spokeswoman for Gohmert, said the congressman parked in a one of several empty spots and believed he was allowed to do so. She said a park service officer apologized to Gohmert when he identified himself.

"A park service vehicle pulled up as he was putting a note with the ticket on a vacant park service vehicle, so he showed his official card, explained that his congressional plate was showing and he was authorized to park there," she said. "The park service officer said he had not noticed the ... congressional plate in the front window and would not know what it meant had he seen it. The officer accepted the ticket back and apologized."

The police report contains no mention of an apology, according to Politico.

Willingham said Gohmert's office would study the incident and, if he was not allowed to park in the spot, "will most certainly pay the $25 parking ticket."

On Thursday, Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington, an outside watchdog group, said it filed a complaint with the Office of Congressional Ethics against Gohmert "for conduct that reflects discreditably upon the House."

Sprint Epic 4G Touch will receive Android Jelly Bean update today (update)

DNP Sprint Epic 4G Touch Jelly Bean update starts today

Sprint's Galaxy S 4 recently took one step towards being ready for mass consumption, however the carrier hasn't forgotten the device's forefathers. We've received a memo from an anonymous tipster advising that the Epic 4G Touch is set to make the jump to Jelly Bean (Android 4.1, to be exact) starting sometime today. The new software bump will come directly from Samsung and will require a visit to an external website that has yet to go live. The memo also notes that in order to perform the update, you'll need access to a rig with Windows 7, Vista or XP -- in other words, OS X and Windows 8 users will have to visit a Sprint store to get their fix. For those fortunate enough to gain access in the coming hours, let us know how it's treating you in comments below.

Update: Waiting for official confirmation? Then just check Sprint's official log of updates for the Epic 4G Touch on its website, which now lists the GB27 version. It's scheduled to start today, and to answer the question of why it's only going out via PC download and not OTA, the log cites the (unspecified) size of the update.

[Thanks, anonymous]
