Crawdads hit 4 home runs, extend win streak to 5 | Hickory Daily ...

The Hickory Crawdads hit four home runs on Friday night to beat visiting West Virginia 9-6 and extend their winning streak to five in South Atlantic League baseball.

Christopher Grayson, Jhonny Gomez, Zach Cone and Jeremy Williams each homered as the Crawdads erased an early two-run deficit to improve to 28-25.

Game 3 of a four-game series against the Power (18-37) is at 6 p.m. Saturday at L.P. Frans Stadium.

West Virginia had a 3-1 lead after two innings, scoring three runs in the first inning on a two-run home run by Jose Osuna and RBI single by Dan Gamache.

Hickory got a run in the first on a solo home run by Grayson and added two more runs in the second inning when Jordan Akins singled with two outs and scored on a home run by Gomez.

The Crawdads grabbed a 7-5 lead with four runs in the fifth inning. Roughned Odor doubled and scored on Grayson?s single and Cone hit a solo home run to prompt a pitching change.

West Virginia then brought in Clario Perez and Williams greeted him with a two-run home run.

Grayson and Akins each went 2-for-4 for the Crawdads, while Carlos Mesa had three hits and Kirk Singer, Gregory Polanco and Chris Lashmet each had two hits for the Power.

Andrew Faulkner (2-3) got the win and Nicholas McBridge picked up his first save for Hickory.

Nicholas Kingham took the loss for West Virginia, giving up seven hits and six earned runs over 4 2/3 innings.

Caldwell County 7, Burke County 6

Caldwell County Post 29 remained unbeaten in American Legion baseball, winning at Morganton?s Shuey Field over Burke County Post 21.

Jake Macchia had two hits and Austin Beard had a triple among his two hits and drove in two runs. Bryson Bowman added two doubles and David Martin added two hits for Caldwell County (5-0).

Alex Lawing led Burke County with three hits and Brent Nichols walked three times and scored twice.

Jacob Hatton, who pitched 1 1/3 innings, got the win and Nichols, who threw 1 2/3 innings for Post 21 with five strikeouts took the loss.

Burke County battled back from deficits of 1-0, 4-1 and 6-4 to tie the game three times but never took the lead.

Post 21 made six errors, the last one a throwing error in the ninth that scored Macchia from second base.

The game ended with Lawing singling to left and Wyatt Fleming being thrown out at the plate.

The next games for both teams are Sunday, when Burke County travels to Shelby for a 7 p.m. game and Caldwell County plays a 5 p.m. game at Hendersonville.

GOLF

Pair shares lead in the HGM Classic

Drew Weaver of High Point and George Bryan IV of Chapin, S.C., share the lead of the eGolf Tour?s HGM Hotels Classic after three rounds at Rock Barn Golf and Spa.

Weaver, the 2007 British Amateur champion, and Bryan are at 12-under par 204 heading into Saturday?s final round on the Robert Trent Jones Jr. course.

Weaver had birdies on three of his final seven holes on Friday, finishing with a round of 69.

Bryan, a three-time college golf All-American at South Carolina, had a round of 71.

Matt Short of Hudson is at 67-69-71?207 and he?s tied with six other golfers for eighth place.

?TRACK AND FIELD

?LRU?s Griewisch earns All-District in academics

Kate Griewisch, a Lenoir-Rhyne University graduate, has been named to the 2012 Capital One CoSIDA Academic All-District III team for? women?s track and field and cross country.

Griewisch, from Banner Elk, graduated from LRU with a bachelor?s degree in biology with a 3.85 grade point average.

She finished her athletic career at LRU as a seven-time NCAA Division II All-American in three sports, women?s cross country, outdoor track and field and indoor track and field.

RUNNING

Charity Chase event scheduled Saturday

The seventh annual Charity Chase Half Marathon is expected to draw hundreds of runners and walkers to Hickory on Saturday.

The half marathon will follow a 13.1-mile route that begins in downtown Hickory and winds through northwest and northeast parts of the city.

The race begins at 6:30 a.m. and all participants are anticipated to have finished the race by 10:30 a.m.
