(AP Photo/L'Osservatore Romano, handout)AP - Pope Benedict XVI has set Oct. 12 as the date to make two U.S. saints: Kateri Tekakwitha, a Mohawk Indian who spent most of her life in what is now upstate New York, and Mother Marianne Cope, who began religious life in the same area but moved to Hawaii to care for leprosy patients.

How Does Ecstasy Affect the Body?

Ecstasy (MDMA) is a synthetic drug that has psychoactive properties. The chemical make-up of ecstasy is similar to methamphetamine and mescaline. This illegal drug is ingested in a capsule or tablet form. Ecstasy is sometimes used in combination with other drugs such as marijuana, cocaine and various other substances. So how does ecstasy effect the body?

Ecstasy affects the specific neurons in the brain that use serotonin to communicate with other neurons. It can also have an effect on norepinephrine, which is the neurotransmitter that can produce an increase in heart rate or blood pressure.

How Does Ecstasy Effect the Body After Ingestion?

When an individual takes this drug, he can experience feelings of euphoria and emotional warmth. The user will feel as if he has unlimited amounts of energy, and he will have no concept of time.

Perception and tactile experiences can be muted.

However, in addition to the high feeling, ecstasy can also produce depression, sleep problems, confusion, cravings for more drugs and extreme anxiety. These symptoms can happen right after taking ecstasy or sometimes days or weeks after using.

Research that has been conducted in animals shows? ecstasy can be damaging to the brain. One study consisted of giving ecstasy to primates for only four days. After this short-term use, there was damage detected to the serotonin nerve terminals. This damage was still there seven years later. So the possibility of brain damage from ecstasy use is certainly there.

So how does ecstasy effect the body besides interfering with brain function? This drug can be very dangerous because it acts on the body the same way a stimulant would. It can cause a significant increase in blood pressure and heart rate. It can also produce nausea, blurred vision, sweating and chills. If ecstasy is taken in high doses, it can cause the body temperature to rise significantly. A high body temperature can damage the liver, kidneys, heart and even cause death.

Ecstasy can even interfere with the body's ability to metabolize this drug. This means that a significant amount of this drug can build up in the body after just a few doses over a short period of time. These drugs often contain a combination of other substances such as ephedrine, ketamine, cocaine and caffeine. The combination of other drugs, especially when used with alcohol could put the user at great risk for death. Ecstasy can become additive and the more it is used the more dangerous it can become.

LDS Parenting: The Happiest Millionaire

I love old Disney movies, and I have passed down that love to my children. Yesterday after a rough morning, we decided we needed to step back, get calm and regroup! So we all gathered in the living room ( we have christmas lights all over the ceiling of our living room, it just makes it festive and cozy ) and we read from our current literature book, The Five Little Peppers and How They Grew. We read for about half an hour, then we popped in a new to us, old Disney movie, The Happiest Millionaire. The movie is full of bright, cheery songs, and hilarious hijinks! I can?t even begin to choose my favorite part, possibly the fact that Fred MacMurray?s character, the dad, the happiest millionaire, teaches the Biddle Bible Class in the stable, which basically involves them wearing matching shirts and boxing!!!!

happiest millionaire 3

I was surprised while watching the movie yesterday at a certain line in the film. Fred?s character is sad because his daughter Cordy ( pictured above) wants to go to a college for girls. He basically says to his wife ? She won?t like it! Why would she want to leave this special world of ours??? That hit me hard. As parents, we try hard to create a happy home, a haven for our family, and basically, a special world for them. Now, of course the special world in the movie is quite, umm?. movie special? They have a conservatory full of alligators ! The Irish servants burst into song and dance with the family. The dad decides to go on a chocolate cake diet, because he feels it has all the best ?elements?. What kinds of things do we do to make our home a special world for our families? Do we concentrate to much on making sure that everything is ?perfect? ? That we as mothers and fathers do the right thing all the time? Guess what folks! We are not perfect! But we can be the ?Happiest Families? on the block!! One of the greatest parts of being a momma to me , is getting to be silly and laugh a lot. I get to create the dream home I?ve always wanted? nope, my house is not a mansion, in fact it?s a tiny little three bedroom manufactured home. But it has a huge yard full of nature and wonder. The living room as I?ve mentioned has our christmas lights up on the ceiling still because they just make us happy. We like to throw ?parties?. One time we decided to watch ?The Wizard of Oz? and the girls wore their red sparkle shoes and while we watched the movie and sang along, we colored rainbows and then put tape on them and taped them to the ceiling. Lot?s of people comment on them when they come to visit. I tell them to lay down on the couch and look up and tell me if they don?t smile!!!! I love to create that ?special? world for my family. Another thing that is important to me in our special world, our happy home, is that we have the Gospel. At night we love to gather on momma and daddy?s new bed ( what a blessing!) and we read the Scriptures. There is always music on in the house. We love the hymns and other LDS music. There are so many ways to have the Gospel in our special world. Our home has many pictures of Christ, and pictures of our family. It is truly a happy home. So, tell me, what do you do to make your home a special world?

Did I mention that the Happiest Millionaire has alligators in their house?? Smile

Whitney Houston's Funeral Returns Her To New Jersey Roots

Singer was born in Garden State and grew up singing in Newark church.

When Whitney Houston is eulogized and laid to rest on Saturday in New Jersey, it will complete the circle of her personal and professional lives in more ways than one. Houston, who died at age 48 last Saturday in a Beverly Hills hotel room of as-yet-undetermined causes, grew up in New Jersey and cut her teeth singing at Newark, New Jersey's New Hope Baptist church.

It is there that her family and friends will gather to remember a favorite daughter who burst onto the global music scene in the mid-1980s, never forgetting where she came from. Houston was the third and youngest child born, on August 9, 1963, to gospel great Cissy Houston and her late husband John, an entertainment executive and former Army serviceman. The couple raised their brood in what has been described as a strict but loving household in middle-class East Orange, New Jersey, where the family moved in 1967 following six days of riots in Newark tied to a police incident involving a black cabdriver. To her neighbors and childhood friends, Houston was known affectionately by her nickname "Nippy" and for the angelic, powerful voice she shared with them during Sunday worship services.

Her Grammy-winning mother led the musical program at New Hope and the "I Will Always Love You" singer's cousin Dionne Warwick also sang in the choir of the 112-year-old church. Whitney got her start as a soloist in the church's junior choir at age 11. Houston was just one of the stars to rise from the city of 275,000, located 10 miles from New York City, which also spawned comedian Jerry Lewis and rock icon Paul Simon.

According to local media reports, Houston kept those roots strong even after she ascended to stardom, dropping in every so often to sing at Easter Sunday services at New Hope and spending time with neighbors at barbecue and holiday gatherings.

The town returned the favor, renaming a local elementary school near her childhood home Whitney E. Houston Academy of Creative and Performing Arts in 1997. Houston would often drop in and spend time with the pre-kindergarten-through-eighth-grade students, who gathered for a memorial event on Monday where they heard speeches, released white balloons and listened to Houston's legendary rendition of the National Anthem from Super Bowl XXV.

Her funeral will be a private affair that will be streamed live online and offered to TV networks. New Hope Pastor Joe A. Carter will preside over the small, intimate ceremony, which he said will be a "celebration for one who has left us with so much," and the eulogy will be given by gospel singer Marvin Winans.

People magazine reported on Thursday that Houston's "The Bodyguard" co-star Kevin Costner will speak at the funeral, which will also feature songs from Houston's godmother, R&B icon Aretha Franklin, and Motown legend Stevie Wonder, in addition to words from her longtime record boss Clive Davis.

New Jersey's outspoken governor Chris Christie, meanwhile, was forced to defend his decision to have flags in the state flown at half-staff on Saturday following complaints. "What I would say to everybody is there but for the grace of God go I," he said, according to The Associated Press. Christie brushed aside complaints that Houston, who struggled with drug and alcohol addiction during her life, is not deserving of such reverence.

"Whitney Houston was an important part of the cultural fabric of this state," Christie said. "She was a cultural icon in this state, and her accomplishments in her life were a source of great pride for the people of this state ... I am disturbed by people who believe that because her ultimate demise — and we don't know what is the cause of her death yet — but because of her history of substance abuse that somehow she's forfeited the good things that she did in her life," he said. "I just reject that on a human level."

Share your condolences with Whitney's family and friends on our Facebook page.

ESPN cuts Ron Jaworski from "Monday Night Football" (Reuters)

NEW YORK, Feb 15 (TheWrap.com) ? For just the sixth time in Monday Night Football's 42-year history, only two announcers will man the iconic booth, ESPN announced Wednesday.

Mike Tirico and Jon Gruden will handle all of the commentary for the sports empire's signature broadcast, as long-time ESPN analyst Ron Jaworski will exit.

Jaworski, a former NFL quarterback known as "Jaws," will still contribute to ESPN's other football programming, such as "Sunday NFL Countdown" and "NFL Live."

"I thank Ron for the great contributions he has made to Monday Night Football and look forward to the many ways he will enhance our studio presentation from our NFL-branded shows to SportsCenter," ESPN President John Skipper said in a statement. "With two strong analysts in Ron and Jon, these moves will better utilize their strengths and benefit our entire NFL presentation."

Ever since ESPN began airing "Monday Night Football" in 2006, its broadcast booth has been a lightning rod for discussion and controversy.

Its first experiment paired Tirico with Tony Kornheiser and Joe Theismann.

It was Kornheiser that divided fans and critics, as some praised his unorthodox approach and others saw him as ill-fitted to in-game broadcasting.

The former Washington Post columnist and co-host of ESPN's "Pardon the Interruption" brought less knowledge of the "X's and Os' -- specific plays and formations -- but an opinionated voice and more pop culture references.

It was reported that he and Tirico, ESPN's choice as play-by-play man, did not see eye to eye.

After one year, ESPN replaced Theismann with Jaworski, who shared the booth with Tirico ever since.

Two years later, Kornheiser left and was replaced by Gruden, the former Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Oakland Raiders head coach.

This was documented in detail in Tom Shales and James Andrew Miller's oral history of ESPN, "These Guys Have All the Fun."

"Monday Night Football" has been the highest-rated show on cable six years running.

(AP) ? There's no good spot on Cape Cod for dolphins to continue this winter's massive and unexplained beachings, but a group of 11 has chosen one of the worst.

The remote inlet down Wellfleet's Herring River is a place where the tides recede fast and far, and that's left the animals mired in a grayish-brown mud one local calls "Wellfleet mayonnaise."

Walking is the only way to reach the animals, but it's not easy. Rescuers crunch through cord grass and seashells before hitting a grabby muck that releases a footstep only after a sucking pop. One volunteer hits a thigh-deep "hole" and tumbles forward. The mud covers his face like messy war paint the rest of the morning.

Rescuers make a quick assessment once they reach the animals.

One dolphin is dead, but the other 10 appear healthy, and some bang their tails in the shallows, struggling to move. Rescuers decide the best course is to wait for the incoming tide to free the dolphins, then boats can try to herd them out of trouble. The only other alternative is hauling them to a waiting trailer, and open water. But the trailer is nearly a mile away.

Waiting has risks. Dolphins can't survive long on land and there's no guarantee the boats can push the dolphins on to safety.

"Now's where we start crossing our fingers," said Brian Sharpe of the International Fund for Animal Welfare, as he heads for a boat.

A year ago, Wednesday's 11 stranded dolphins would have seemed remarkable. Now, they just add to a growing tally.

In the last month, 177 short-beaked common dolphins have stranded on Cape Cod, and 124 have died. The total is nearly five times the average of 37 common dolphins that have stranded annually during the last 12 years.

So far, there's no explanation.

Workers at the IFAW, which has led the rescue efforts, tag and take blood samples of the stranded animals, necropsies have been done on dead dolphins and a Congressional briefing was held early this month in the push for answers. But researchers can offer only theories about things such as changes in weather, water temperature or behavior of the dolphins' prey.

Geography may also play a role, if the dolphins are getting lost along the Cape's jagged inner coastline, in towns like Wellfleet.

In mid-February, Wellfleet feels like a place long emptied out after a dimly-remembered party. A closed mini-golf course, candy store and drive-in theater are among the dormant summer businesses seen on a drive into town. A downtown road rolls past shuttered cottages and motel cabins.

But Wellfleet is a hot spot for the dolphin strandings, in part because of features such as Jeremy Point, a thin peninsula that blocks the way to Cape Cod Bay if the dolphins wander too far into the town's harbor. The IFAW boat is charged with pushing the animals past the point Wednesday, once they're freed.

Meanwhile, rescuers in orange vests and black waders work in pairs to move the dolphins on slings, bringing them closer together and pointed the right way.

"We'll take advantage of the fact that they're social animals," said Kerry Branon, an IFAW spokeswoman. "We're hoping if we release them together, they'll stick together and then we'll herd them out around the point."

Not all the dolphins are on board, though. One drifts off to the left, where he could beach again. The manager of the stranding team, Katie Moore, slides over, grabs its dorsal fin, and gives it a push in the right direction.

"You're going the wrong way, buddy," she says.

The inlet continues to fill and the dolphins break into waters that are deeper than the rescuers can follow, but they're in two groups. The IFAW's boat eventually follows one pod and the Wellfleet harbormaster takes another. The noise from the motors pushes the dolphins ahead. So do acoustic pingers, devices that make a sound that annoys the dolphins.

From here, all the shore workers can do is await word from the boats, which will follow the dolphins until dark, if needed. The crew trudges off the beach and gathers later in a parking lot at the Wellfleet marina, where coffee and two boxes of doughnut holes will be served.

Volunteer Mike Giblin, muck still on his face, sits in his truck and explains why, at 64, he can't wait to get an early-morning call to help the dolphins. The animals are special, says the retired high school teacher. He adds that the dolphins somehow know the workers are there to help. He's certain.

Moore later smiles at the thought, but dismisses any mystical link with the animals.

"They're wild animals," she says. "This is not comforting for them. They don't want to be touched."

The day's gray cold has soaked through Moore and she's worn out. Help for her team is coming from different places; some workers from a Virginia aquarium assisted Wednesday. But she says the pace of the strandings has been exhausting.

"We just don't know when it's going to end anymore," she said. "That wears on people."

She's been encouraged by IFAW's success so far in getting dolphins back to sea. She also believes in the work.

"I think that as humans we have such a huge impact on the ocean environment and on these animals in other ways, that this is our opportunity to do the right thing."

As Moore speaks, her eyes flicker out to the harbor, where she can see the harbormaster's boat has led its group of dolphins to sea. But her agency's boat is still out, and she wonders if those dolphins will make it, or simply beach again. She wonders if she'll soon be second-guessing her decision to let the tide try to free the dolphins, rather than her workers.

But it's too soon for answers.

"Ask me tomorrow how I feel about that decision," she said.

NY Court of Appeals puts burden on buyers when seeking damages for contract repudiation

February 14, 2012 01:00PM

New York?s highest court ruled last week that real estate buyers must prove they were ?ready, willing and able? to close a deal in order to procure damages should a seller renege on a contract, Reuters reported.

In Mario Pesa versus Yoma Development Group, the Court of Appeals found that Yoma did not act unlawfully when it sold a contract for Queens development parcels to a third party. The plaintiffs had entered into contract to buy three plots where they planned multi-family structures. They argued that Yoma refused to move forward with the sale because the value of the property had increased nearly 50 percent since they made down payments.

But Yoma argued that the buyers had not secured a mortgage to finance their purchase and thus was forced to look elsewhere. Clarifying a division among lower courts on the issue, the Court of Appeals ruled that the plaintiffs were not ?ready, willing and able? to close the deal, thereby validating the contract sale to a third party.

The judge did not set forth criteria for determining what exactly meets that standard going forward. He said it was supported by ?common sense,? and put the burden of proof on buyers, who can more easily produce evidence of their intentions.?[Reuters]

If you are capable of self-financing, your business will surely take a flight. Otherwise, small business loans remain the only option.

Venture Capital versus Rapid Capital Funding:

In the process of availing venture capital the investors offer money to the start up firms for a perceived long lasting growth of the business. But, you need to look for a wealthy investor or an investment bank for the venture capital required in your business. Moreover, this form of business loan is apt for the business owners who are planning to launch their venture. In most of the cases, this business loan is offered to businesses with multimillion dollar business plans. Rapid Capital Funding on the other hand offers merchant cash advance to businesses of any size. They do not bother about the loan amount will be spent.

Investors and Small businessloans:

Investments can be offered by both, wealthy individuals or the reputed commercial banks. There is not much difference between the venture capitalists and rich business investors. In both the cases, a management team will be evaluating your small business thoroughly. Rapid Capital Funding does not do that. In fact, their smallbusinessloans are available without a much big business growth plan. You can spend the money as you wish to.

Rapid Capital Merchant Cash Advance vs. Commercial Bank Loan:

Commercial banks are always ready with their business loans to be exploited potentially for any form of expenditure in your business. But, they never pay you the loan without proper collateral. Moreover, banks do not plan for offering their loans to businesses that do not have a considerable credit history. Rapid capital offers loans to the business owner, no matter how long he has been in this business. Good or bad credit does not become a hindrance for getting enough business loans.

Marines practice amphibious war, storm US beaches (AP)

ABOARD THE USS WASP ? A small group of Marines trudged onto the beach sands in pitch-black night with an armada of U.S. Navy warships sailing just off the shore. Their mission: root out insurgents that threatened to attack another American force to the south.

The careful operation under cover of darkness wasn't an assault in the Middle East or Asia. It was a training exercise on the coast of Virginia and North Carolina, designed to return thousands of Marines to their amphibious roots and train for a more modern version of the well-known beach assaults conducted during World War II.

Military officials say the operation being conducted in Virginia and North Carolina is the largest amphibious training exercise they've attempted in at least a decade. Marines have been fighting wars in landlocked countries like Iraq and Afghanistan for years, and many have never even set foot on a Navy ship. That's of particular concern as the military shifts its strategic focus toward the coastal regions of the Middle East, such as Iran, and the Pacific, where North Korea and China are drawing increasing attention from the U.S.

"Sooner or later, the nation is going to require a sizeable force to go somewhere where folks don't want us to go. So, no, the image is not Iwo Jima, Tarawa and so forth, but nevertheless, when we go to shore someplace where we're not wanted ashore, we have to be ready to defend force to accomplish the mission and then to sustain the force once it's ashore," said Brig. Gen. Christopher Owens, deputy commanding general of 2nd Marine Expeditionary Force.

About 3,500 Marines made landfall on the beaches near Camp Lejeune, N.C., and Virginia Beach beginning Monday, days before an aerial assault and insertion of Marines launched from sea is made on Fort Pickett in Virginia.

About 6:30 p.m. Monday, between 120 and 150 Marines traveled by landing hovercraft from the USS New York ? an amphibious landing dock ship ? to the cold shores of Fort Story, a military base along Virginia Beach hidden away from nearby high-rise resorts.

After unloading equipment about an hour and a half later, they made their way about 2.5 miles to raid a mock village playing host to a terrorist training camp. The Marines were receiving reconnaissance from about 10 of their brethren who had been hiding out undetected for the past few days gathering intelligence after swimming ashore.

Suddenly, among the wooden darkness, gunfire, pyrotechnics and shouting filled the bitter air as about 50 Marines entered the camp. Helicopters circled low overhead and light armored vehicles neared the village to tend to any wounded and clear the site.

Once clear, "killed" enemy combatants were searched for intelligence, civilians were moved to a secure location and the Marines blew up a booby-trapped weapons cache before returning to the beach and to their ship ? all within four hours.

The raid was operated at night to simulate typical conditions in which such raids are made.

"You train like you fight," said Gunnery Sgt. Issac Sweeton with the Special Operations Training Group at Camp Lejeune, N.C. "At the end of the day, we own the night."

In the scenario developed by military leaders, the Marines coming ashore at Camp Lejeune are landing in a fictional, friendly country called Amberland, whose southern neighbor, Amber, has been invaded by Garnet. The Garnet army has rapidly advanced northward along the coast to roughly Wilmington, N.C., overtaking its port and airport, and U.S. forces have been asked to halt the advance.

Amberland is also a country that has a cadre of insurgents operating in it under the direction of the hostile, invading Garnet nation. Canadian minesweepers have helped set the stage for the landing, while U.S. forces also practiced evacuating hundreds of civilians before the raid.

All told, more than two dozen Navy ships and more than 20,000 service members are participating in the exercise along with allies from eight countries. That is at least twice the number of personnel that were involved in a similar West Coast training exercise two years ago, and it provides a more realistic scenario for how the U.S. would likely conduct amphibious landings in the future.

The amphibious invasions of the past, when the U.S. took thousands of casualties in a single battle, are not likely to be repeated. The new approach military leaders are using in the exercise known as Bold Alligator involves a more nuanced approach that relies on allies and friendly countries. That means relying on multi-nation coalitions and deciding whether to stage ships in port or out to sea because it could disrupt the host nation's economy. Navy leaders prefer to operate out of a "sea base" away from shore.

This week's exercise has been in the planning stages for several years, but it also occurs days before the president will submit his defense budget proposal to Congress. Several members of Congress visited the USS Wasp, an amphibious assault ship serving as the exercise's flagship, in the days leading up to the assault.

"We didn't put Bold Alligator together to send a message to Congress, but there may be, you know, there's always second-order effects," said Chief of Naval Operations Adm. Jonathan Greenert.

As part of the Defense Department's budget proposal, some ships will be retired earlier than expected while the purchase of others is being delayed.

Amphibious assaults were common during World War II, when Allied troops landed on various islands in the Pacific. And perhaps the best-known amphibious assault was the Normandy invasion of German-occupied France ? depicted in "Saving Private Ryan" and other films ? when U.S. troops stormed Omaha Beach. Since then, such landings have become far more rare, though amphibious assaults were conducted during Operation Desert Storm and the recent Iraq War.

The Navy is concerned about developing an amphibious mindset for the future. Adm. John C. Harvey, commander of U.S. Fleet Forces Command, issued a memo last year urging every sailor in the Atlantic Fleet to read the Navy's doctrine on amphibious operations, as well as three books about the 1982 conflict between Argentina and the United Kingdom over the Falkland Islands.

Likewise, Lt. Gen. Dennis Hejlik, commander of U.S. Marine Corps Forces Command, also told his Marines to beef up their knowledge of historic amphibious battles.

However, for Marines like Sgt. David Smith, an amphibious assault vehicle section leader, he knows there's nothing like getting his crews and others who aren't accustomed to amphibious warfare live training to prepare for coming ashore.

"We've been working with these guys a lot, and we'll do a lot of training and we'll head out in the field and head out to the beach for a couple days, but you can't mock coming out of a ship unless you're actually doing it," he said. "Some of those drivers who have never done it, it's their first time on a ship. You can't beat that."

Which Remedies for High Blood Pressure are Best? ? ArticlePlusX ...

While it is important to diagnose your high blood pressure as early as you can, it is even more important that you do everything you can to control it. Untreated, hypertension can lead to serious conditions such as heart disease. You have lots of choices for treating your high blood pressure and we?ll look at a few of them in this article. People who suffer from high blood pressure really need to seek the advice and care of a medical professional.

Exercise is a great way to treat high blood pressure. There are quite a lot of people who lead very sedentary lives which can lead to major issues like high blood pressure, obesity and heart disease. You should consult with your doctor before beginning an exercise program, and you can start off slowly, especially if you haven?t exercised in a long time. It?s possible to begin at any level, and you can begin with something as simple as taking daily walks. The actual form of exercise you do isn?t as important as how regularly you do it. Exercising regularly is perhaps the best way to lower your blood pressure and improve your health naturally.

Exercises that are designed to deepen your breathing and reduce stress, such as yoga or qi gong, may help you reduce your high blood pressure. The amount of oxygen you take in is important to your general health as well as your blood pressure and you can increase this by simply taking a meditation class that focuses on your breathing or through a DVD or online program that teaches you how to breath properly. Vigorous forms of yoga will help you to lose weight and reduce stress as well as teaching you breathing techniques. Regardless of what you choose, any practice or exercise that is geared towards relaxation is helpful at lowering your blood pressure.

One particular remedy for high blood pressure that has gotten a lot of play recently is Resveratrol. This is found naturally in wine, grapes and in blueberries. Some researchers believe that drinking a glass of wine every day can be beneficial to your health, but it?s important to realize that any health benefits you get from alcohol only apply to small amounts, as large quantities can raise your blood pressure and cause other problems, such as liver damage. Of course, if you are one of the people who is predisposed to alcoholism, you should avoid even the tiniest quantity of it. You can find many resveratrol supplements on the market today, and you may find this is the simplest way to make sure you are getting this nutrient regularly. Resveratrol is just one way that you can lower your blood pressure.

In conclusion, it?s always a good idea to check your blood pressure on a regular basis and get medical advice if it?s high. However, in many cases, hypertension can be effectively controlled using a variety of natural remedies and making certain changes in your daily habits. This article has examined some of the proven ways of treating high blood pressure and, sometimes, combining a few of these methods with changes in diet and exercise can be quite effective in helping you with your problem.

Obama Expands Refinancing Plan to Help More Homeowners ...

During last week?s State of the Union address, President Barack Obama blueprinted his plan to build a stronger, recovered American economy, which involved healing the bubble-burst housing market. This morning, Obama followed up on his word and unveiled more details behind his expanded refinancing program. The new plan, which broadens the administration?s Home Affordable Refinance Program (HARP), offers homeowners with privately held mortgages a chance to refinance their mortgage at record low rates, saving qualified borrowers an annual average of $3,000.

This, of course, isn?t the first time President Obama has taken to programs and policies to encourage a housing recovery. ?I?ll be honest, the programs we?ve put forward didn?t work at the scale we?d hoped.. Not as many people have taken advantage of it as we wanted,? Obama said to the crowd gathered at James Lee Community Center in Falls Church, VA. The original HARP program allowed borrowers with Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac-backed mortgages to refinance at lower rates. The Associated Press reports, an estimated 1 million homeowners have used it, a number far below the 4 to 5 million homeowners that was anticipated.

?There are policy limits when it comes to what the President can propose to fix housing, and he was realistic about these limits in his speech this morning,? said Zillow Chief Economist Dr. Stan Humphries. ?That?s a lesson he has learned the hard way after setting such high expectations initially for HARP, only to be beaten up when those expectations haven?t been met.?

The new and improved HARP aims to address the estimated 3.5 million borrowers with privately held mortgages who have maintained their credit but aren?t able to qualify for a refi because they?re underwater. ?The reality is more refi?s will help homeowners, and we should be helping homeowners, but this policy is not going to materially change the number of defaults that are likely to occur,? continued Humphries. ?Most of these are occurring because of a toxic combination of long-term unemployment and negative equity, and a reduction in monthly mortgage payments won?t help many of the people in that situation.?

Despite this added effort from Obama around the housing crisis, the true battleground for this regenerative housing policy lies with the House. This program outlines an estimated cost of $5 billion to $10 billion for which payments would come from a fee on large banks, a tactic Congress hasn?t favored in the past. ?The devil is in the details around loan-level price adjustments, mortgage insurance, and put-backs. Being more open to these is the key to getting refi?s into the millions, ? said Humphries. ?Unfortunately, Congressional support on this is likely to be very low.?

While subject to a clashing Congress, people care intensely about housing. It will continue to be a keynote issue for campaigning candidates as well as a focus for Obama as his election-year package picks up speed.

Indiana becomes 23rd "right-to-work" state (Reuters)

INDIANAPOLIS (Reuters) ? Indiana became the 23rd state to pass anti-union "right-to-work" legislation on Wednesday and the first in the nation's manufacturing heartland, dealing a blow to organized labor by allowing workers to opt out of paying union dues.

Indiana's Republican governor Mitch Daniels signed the legislation into law immediately after it was given final approval in the state Senate, making Indiana the first state to adopt such a measure since Oklahoma did so a decade ago.

Daniels, governor since 2005 and a prominent spokesman for Republicans nationally, said he decided Indiana needed the controversial new law after several businesses decided to locate elsewhere.

"Seven years of evidence and experience ultimately demonstrated that Indiana did need a right-to-work law to capture jobs for which, despite our highly rated business climate, we are not currently being considered," he said in a statement after signing the bill.

Indiana is being closely watched by both major political parties in the presidential election debate over job creation and reviving the U.S. economy.

The Indiana state Senate vote of 28 to 22 was followed by calls of "shame, shame" from members of the public outside the chamber. Opponents of right-to-work call it "union busting" and say it will lower the wages of workers.

The vote drew thousands of protesters to the state capital in Indianapolis on Wednesday. Some shouted "Stop the Super Bowl," referring to the fact that the city will host Sunday's National Football League championship game.

About 2,000 people were inside the Capitol building, and large crowds were also on the outside as the vote took place, but no count of the crowd outside was available, according to Indiana State Police Captain David Bursten.

Republican state Senator Carlin Yoder, the bill's main sponsor, said it would not prevent anyone from joining a union.

"It is simply allowing those individuals to decide for themselves if they want to pay union dues or not," Yoder said during the floor debate on Wednesday.

DEMOCRATS TRIED TO DELAY BILL

Senate Minority Leader Vi Simpson, a Democrat, called the notion that many employers would be attracted to Indiana because of the law a myth.

"Right-to work is a race to the bottom, it's a downward spiral to lower wages and fewer benefits," Simpson said.

Indiana joins 22 other states with right-to-work laws, most of them in the South and West, and its action could encourage other states to pass similar laws.

Democrats and their union supporters tried to slow the bill by boycotting the legislature and other delaying tactics, but Republicans supportive of right-to-work control both chambers of the legislature and the governor's office.

John Sampson, president of the Northeast Indiana Regional Partnership, an economic development group, said he viewed passage of the bill as historic.

"I think this sends a clear message to the country that Indiana is going to lead in preparing a place for us to grow our economy and make a place for workers to be successful in the future," Sampson said. As for the argument that the bill would drive down wages and benefits, Sampson said "the marketplace sets wages, not unions."

Indiana passed similar legislation in 1957 but it was repealed in 1965.

"As working men and women did in the 1950s and 60s, this generation of Hoosiers will now rise up, join forces and repeal this anti-worker agenda again," Indiana State AFL-CIO President Nancy Guyott was quoted as saying on the organization's website.

In 2011, 11.3 percent of wage and salary workers in Indiana were members of unions, compared to 11.8 percent in the country overall, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.

Organized labor could be a significant issue during the 2012 election year. In addition to the Indiana action, Democrats and unions are hoping to recall Wisconsin's Republican Governor Scott Walker after he championed a new law that severely restricted collective bargaining powers of public sector unions in the state.

Ohio turned back similar attempts to curb public sector unions last year, voting in a state referendum against the proposal.

Seven held in China cadmium spill

Seven chemical company officials have been detained over industrial waste that polluted a river in China's Guangxi region, state media said.

Cadmium pollutants were detected in the Longjiang River on 15 January after tests were carried out on dead fish.

The level then was 80 times the official limit, regional environment protection official Feng Zhennian said.

Teams have been putting neutralising chemicals into the river to treat the contamination.

Mr Feng, who is also a spokesman for the emergency response centre managing the spill, did not name the seven people at the press briefing on Monday.

But he said one of the companies involved was Jinchengjiang Hongquan Lithopone Material in Hechi city.

Xinhua reported last week that another company, the Guangxi Jinhe Mining Co, was suspected of causing the contamination.

Officials said on Saturday that cadmium levels at the source of the pollution near the Lalang reservoir had normalised.

The pollution concern was now near the Luodong hydropower station downstream, said Mr Feng. Cadmium levels there were still 25 times higher than the official limit, he added.

Panic water buying

Local officials told Xinhua that they had stepped up efforts to ensure water safety for nearby cities.

Over the past week the local fire department and police force have been putting neutralisers, made of dissolved ammonium chloride, into various locations in the river in an attempt to treat the contamination.

Cadmium, commonly found in industrial usage such as the production of batteries, is a carcinogen which can damage the kidneys, bones and respiratory system.

Last week residents in Liuzhou city, located at the lower end of the river, emptied supermarket shelves of bottled water in panic buying.

The local government said measures have been put in place to ensure a steady supply of bottled water and that prices remain stable.

Water sample test results were also being updated in local media regularly.

"We are confident and able to ensure safe drinking water to residents in Liuzhou City. Meanwhile, we have found several alternative water sources, including underground water," said Chen Gang, secretary of Liuzhou City Party Committee.

In order to prevent further contamination from other potential sources, environmental authorities had ordered that production be suspended at all seven heavy metal plants located upstream, Xinhua said.
