China spends another $10 billion on water project (AP)

BEIJING ? China says it plans to invest more than 64 billion yuan ($10 billion) this year in a project to divert water to the country's arid northern regions.

The official Xinhua News Agency says China has already spent 138 billion yuan ($22 billion) on the project and relocated 330,000 people who lived near a reservoir on one of the routes. Construction began in 2002.

It is expected to start transferring water in 2013.

When completed, the project's three routes will move billions of tons (metric tons) of water from China's central, southern and western regions through pipes and canals to Beijing and fast-growing cities in the north.

Critics have warned that the project will cause environmental damage and still not quench the thirst of China's northern boomtowns.
