As Florida votes, Romney seems in driver's seat (Reuters)

COCOA BEACH, Florida (Reuters) ? Florida's Republican voters go to the polls on Tuesday in a high-stakes presidential primary election that could determine the direction of the race.

In what shapes up as a two-man contest, most opinion polls show Mitt Romney, a former Massachusetts governor, holding a double-digit lead over Newt Gingrich, a former U.S. House speaker.

Florida is the largest state to hold a presidential primary so far this year and a Romney victory would give him a big boost in the state-by-state battle to decide who will face President Barack Obama in November.

Polls open at 7 a.m. and close at 7 p.m. local time. Most of the state is on Eastern Time, except the western Panhandle region, which is on Central Time.

Just 10 days ago Gingrich was riding high after an upset win in South Carolina. Strong debate performances fueled a come-from-behind win in which Gingrich captured all key demographics.

Florida has been a different story, in part reflecting a torrent of attack ads targeting Gingrich, both from Romney's campaign and from an independent "super" political action committee.

On the stump on Monday, Romney was breezy and Gingrich combative, reflecting the respective states of their campaigns. Romney cancelled his scheduled Tuesday morning event in Tampa; Gingrich will crisscross the Orlando region making four appearances in a final appeal for support.

"We were getting just walked on by Speaker Gingrich and really didn't respond very well in South Carolina," Romney said on NBC's "Today" show on Monday. "So we decided, we're going to respond."

Romney's advertising has focused on Gingrich's work for mortgage giant Freddie Mac, and an ethics probe and his resignation as speaker. It has also mocked Gingrich's attempt to ride the coattails of conservative hero Ronald Reagan.

"There's nothing like $17.5 million of false ads to make a big difference," Gingrich told CNN on Monday. "I have never seen a candidate for president that methodically dishonest."

By the end of the day on Tuesday, the campaigns and allied Super PACs are due to report whose money they are spending, and how, in an increasingly expensive campaign. Campaign finance filings to the Federal Election Commission will for the first time officially show who contributed money to the Super PACs and fueled their multimillion-dollar spending sprees.

GINGRICH FALLING IN POLLS

Gingrich, who often touts his prospects for successfully debating Obama, seemed surprisingly flat in two closely watched Florida debates last week. Since then, his popularity in daily tracking polls has fallen.

A Reuters/Ipsos poll released late on Monday showed Romney's support at 43 percent versus Gingrich at 28 percent.

Battling hard, the Gingrich tactic has been to deride Romney as a "Massachusetts moderate" who raised taxes and fees as governor, enforced a healthcare mandate, and will not provide a sharp enough contrast to Democrat Obama.

When voters hear Gingrich in person they often come away impressed, praising his intellect and toughness.

"I was a little undecided between Newt and Mitt but I have decided for sure that Newt's going to get my vote. He's forthright. He says what he means and means what he says," said Gene Vandevander of Tampa, attending a Gingrich rally.

A straw poll of conservative Tea Party sympathizers released on Monday gave Gingrich 35 percent support against former U.S. Senator Rick Santorum at 31 percent and Romney at 18 percent.

Both other key voter groups, including Hispanics, seem to be heavily favoring Romney, whose campaign has run an aggressive ground-game for weeks.

More than 600,000 Floridians have already cast ballots during the state's early-voting period and they favored Romney by a wide margin, the Reuters/Ipsos poll showed.

As Gingrich vows to fight on, some voters worry that a nasty, prolonged primary fight will hurt the eventual nominee.

"We don't want to attack each other, but to focus on the issues," said voter Jonathan Sanchez of Orlando. "We don't want to seem divided."

Florida's delegates are given on a winner-take-all basis. The two other Republicans on the ballot, Santorum and Texas congressman Ron Paul, have moved on to other states.

After Florida's primary on Tuesday, Nevada's February 4 caucuses are the next contest in the process of choosing a Republican nominee.

Amplifying the role of the business analyst

What is one of the hottest roles in IT?? What is the role that is in demand and will play a critical role in the future?

I believe it is the business analyst.

But not the type of business analyst we have today. ?That type of business analyst was a junior position in IT.? The one responsible for gathering requirements from their business peers.? The one focused on building application solutions and contributing to projects.? The role provided an entry point for new hires into IT.

I started my career in IT as a business analyst in part because a business analysts did not have to be a technician, they could learn the technology while working with the business.? Methodologies and IT processes supported this type of business analyst by defining formats, tools and techniques for requirements gathering and analysis.

This type of business analyst is still required, particularly in consulting and service provider organizations where the focus is on implementing new solutions.? That role is diminishing in captive IT organizations that need greater experience, knowledge and context to create value in today?s complex, cost conscious and cycle time driven world.

CIOs are rebuilding the business analyst role, not as an entry point for new hires but a leverage point for experienced IT professionals.? These CIOs are redeploying experienced I&O professionals, developers, managers etc. who are able to translate what they know into the best way to move the organization forward by building on and adapting what you have rather than always requiring developing a new solution.

CIOs need experienced business analysts because the nature of IT project decisions is changing.? Traditionally the major business decisions revolved around budget authorization for projects.? Secure the budget and the focus moves to starting the project as business analysts get to work completing requirements.

Increasingly, enterprises and CIOs do not have the resources or time to continuously create new solutions.? This changes the role of business analyst from introducing new solutions to solve issues toward a greater emphasis on redeploying existing solutions to new issues.? The value proposition for business analysts with the experience, ability and interest in reuse is strong. Reuse not only reduces risk and cost, but also reduces cycle time by up to half.

An experienced professional as business analyst has the ability to thrive in this environment as they have one or more of the following characteristics:

  • They know if the company has addressed a similar business issue in the past and the potential to reuse those solutions to fit new situations.
  • The actual structure of information, interfaces and relationships between systems.
  • The real performance of existing applications, data and infrastructure, providing a more accurate assessment of capacity, performance and
  • Prior change requests and updates to applications
  • Vulnerabilities, risks and weaknesses that may be exacerbated by the new solution.

Not every experienced IT professional can make the transition to becoming a business analyst.? The new business analyst has to be solution focused; in the sense that they are looking for ways to make things work rather than focusing on all the ways it cannot work.? Fortunately it is relatively easy to figure out if someone is solution focused.? Simply ask the following question:

We want to do ?X? in the business.? What do you think?

Then listen to their response.? If they talk about how it would not work, could not work, or how poorly positioned the company is, then they are not solution focused.? On the other hand, if they start to discuss how it might be possible if we change X, Y, Z etc., then you have found someone who is looking to create solutions.

Re-building the role of business analyst creates new capabilities for amplifying the enterprise based on recognizing the value of experienced and solution focused IT professionals already within your organization. ?Moving from a requirements focus to a solutions focus is an essential part of that transformation both for IT and for the analyst role.

Romney ridicules rival Gingrich on eve of Florida vote (Reuters)

DUNEDIN, Florida (Reuters) ? A confident Mitt Romney solidified his lead in Florida polls and ridiculed Republican rival Newt Gingrich on Monday, calling his opponent's attacks "sad" and "painfully revealing" the day before the state's crucial presidential primary.

Romney's self-assuredness was on full display during a campaign tour that felt at times like a victory lap, with the front-runner telling a crowd of 2,000 in Dunedin, Florida: "With a turnout like this I got a feeling we might win tomorrow."

Romney has a double-digit lead in most polls in the state, where he said voters responded to his more aggressive criticism over the past week of Gingrich's work for mortgage giant Freddie Mac, his ethics probe and his resignation as U.S. House of Representatives speaker.

"There's no question that politics ain't bean bags, and we have made sure that our message is out loud and clear," Romney said on NBC's "Today" show.

Gingrich, hit hard last week by a more aggressive Romney strategy, branded his rival as a party insider and elite friend of Wall Street while pledging to stay in the presidential race for the long haul no matter what the outcome in Florida.

"On big philosophical issues, he is for all practical purposes a liberal and I am a conservative and that's what this fight is going to be about all the way to the convention," he said of Romney on "CBS This Morning."

Romney shrugged off the continued Gingrich attacks, drawing cheers from the crowd when he said Gingrich was not doing too well and had been "flailing about."

"I know, it's sad isn't it?" Romney said, calling it "painfully revealing" and adding: "You've just gotta shake your head."

The bitter back-and-forth in Florida was hardly surprising after two turbulent weeks in what is widely considered the most volatile Republican race for the White House in recent memory.

Just 10 days ago, Romney was limping out of South Carolina, where he came in second. Now Florida is his for the taking after prominent conservatives and party leaders threw their weight behind him, worried a Gingrich nomination would doom Republicans in November's general election against President Barack Obama.

Gingrich said heavy spending by Romney, the former Massachusetts governor, and the Super PAC that supports Romney had killed the momentum Gingrich built with a double-digit win over Romney on January 21 in South Carolina.

"He can bury me for a very short amount of time with four or five or six times as much money, most of it raised in Wall Street from the guys who got bailouts from the government," Gingrich said on ABC's "Good Morning America."

A Quinnipiac University poll of likely Florida voters released on Monday indicated Romney has a 14-point advantage over Gingrich with broad-based support from across the Republican coalition including self-described conservatives, white evangelical Christians and supporters of the Tea Party movement.

Other polls also have shown Romney opening up a double-digit lead on Gingrich.

"If this margin holds up tomorrow, it's hard to see where Gingrich goes from here," Quinnipiac pollster Peter Brown said.

'JUST GETTING STARTED'

But the Gingrich campaign worked to spread the idea he was staying in the race long-term. "This race is just getting started," Martin Baker, Gingrich's national political director, said in a memo to reporters.

At least 1,114 delegates are needed to secure the Republican nomination in August. Florida is the largest state to hold a presidential primary so far this year, and 50 delegates are at stake in a winner-take-all format that will decide who faces Obama.

Baker said even a Romney win in Florida will give him just 7 percent of the delegates needed to claim the nomination. The next contest after Florida will be Nevada on Saturday, followed by Minnesota, Colorado and Missouri on February 7.

"There is a long way to go before either candidate clinches the nomination, and this campaign will continue for months," he said. "The campaign is shifting to a new phase where opportunities are not limited to a single state."

Talking to reporters on Monday, Romney noted Gingrich's growing interest in the campaign's long haul.

"That's usually an indication that you think you're gonna lose. When you say 'I'm gonna go on no matter what happens,' that's usually not a good sign," Romney said.

Gingrich said opposition to his candidacy by party insiders was a badge of honor and a sign of how threatening his candidacy was to the elite.

"They recognize I'm a genuine outsider. I know a lot about Washington having served as speaker but have none of the establishment ties and I will shake the system up. They don't want to be shaken up," he said on CBS.

Both candidates crisscrossed Florida in a final hunt for votes on Monday. The two other remaining Republican contenders, former U.S. Senator Rick Santorum and U.S. Representative Ron Paul, are looking beyond Florida to the next races in Nevada, Minnesota, Colorado and Missouri.

Gingrich was introduced at an afternoon event in Tampa by former presidential rival Herman Cain, who dropped out of the race in November after allegations of sexual harassment and marital infidelity. Cain endorsed Gingrich on Saturday.

"He's the only candidate that talks about and supports the idea of throwing out the tax code in order to get jobs going in this country. Throw it out!" Cain told the crowd.

When Gingrich took the stage, he prompted the crowd to chant "9-9-9" - Cain's frequently cited plan to reform the tax code. "You just made his entire day," Gingrich said.

China to make Shanghai global yuan hub by 2015 (Reuters)

SHANGHAI (Reuters) ? China intends to establish Shanghai as the global centre for yuan trading, clearing and pricing over the next three years as part of broader plans to make the commercial hub an international financial centre by 2020.

The plan for Shanghai's financial innovations through 2015, published jointly by the country's economic planning agency and the Shanghai government on Monday, set goals on a wide range of areas aimed at further developing Shanghai, though some analysts said many of them appeared ambitious.

"This anticipated pace of development looks a bit quick to me," said Frances Cheung, a strategist at Credit Agricole in Hong Kong.

China wants to transform Shanghai into an international financial centre on par with the likes of New York and London by 2020. That goal was set in 2009 by the State Council and analysts have taken it as a broad deadline for liberalizing the currency.

The state economic planning agency, the National Development and Reform Commission, outlined a series of goals under the 2015 yuan plan.

These included making the daily yuan mid-point published by the central bank in the onshore yuan market serve as the benchmark for both domestic and foreign yuan trading markets.

Currency traders interpreted the statement partly as a message from Beijing that the yuan's movements, which have increasingly been influenced by the offshore market over the past few months, should be decided by the government.

"There have been recent developments that have put Hong Kong's offshore market in the spotlight from time to time, such as its pricing of the yuan quite differently from the onshore market," said a trader at a European bank in Shanghai.

"In this sense, the NDRC statement is published at a sensitive time and means the government once again wants to emphasize that it has the final say in the value of the yuan."

The plan also aims to make the government-backed Shanghai Interbank Offered Rate (Shibor) the benchmark for yuan credit everywhere and targeting to more than double the annual non-forex financial market trading volume to 1,000 trillion yuan by 2015.

While the plan lacked details on how China would achieve these targets, analysts were skeptical on the feasibility of some of the planks in the platform.

"Shibor is not even a very well established benchmark onshore," Cheung said. Markets currently use the government's seven-day repurchase rate as the lending benchmark.

Analysts said the NDRC's plan gave no fresh insight into how quickly China would liberalize its capital account, a crucial step in Shanghai's attempt to become a global money hub.

China has taken a series of measures over the past two years to invigorate the offshore yuan market in Hong Kong as part of a longer-term plan to promote the use of the yuan overseas and make it a fully-convertible and international reserve currency along with the U.S. dollar.

Earlier this month, Britain said it was teaming up with its former colony to secure London a top spot as an offshore trading centre for the yuan.

The NDRC's plan would not threaten Hong Kong's current position as the main offshore yuan centre, analysts said.

"Promoting Shanghai as an onshore yuan centre complements Hong Kong's growing role as an offshore yuan center, and should help to strengthen the circle of onshore-offshore yuan flows underpinning the yuan trade settlement process," said Donna H J Kwok, economist at HSBC in Hong Kong.

China will also encourage overseas companies to sell yuan-denominated shares in its domestic stock markets, but the plan did not give a detailed timetable.

Authorities have been discussing launching a so-called "international board" on the Shanghai stock exchange for listing foreign companies' shares, seen as a centerpiece for the 2020 goal, but the city's mayor said this month that the time was not currently right for its launch.

Shanghai will explore M&A opportunities involving overseas stock exchanges to increase its global clout, the NDRC's plan said without elaborating.

Winds force shutdown of tents at NFL Expernience

(AP) ? High winds reportedly topping 50 mph forced organizers to temporarily evacuate two tents at the NFL Experience interactive fan exhibit in downtown Indianapolis.

NFL Experience spokesman Noah Gold said visitors were ushered out of sponsor and memorabilia tents Sunday after tent operators read high wind speeds on gauges attached to the tents. The tents reopened about an hour later.

Gold said he wasn't sure how fast the winds were blowing prior to evacuation, but WTHR-TV reported downtown wind gusts up to 51 mph were recorded Sunday afternoon.

Parts of the NFL Experience featuring football games and shopping inside the Indiana Convention Center were not evacuated.

Gold said he didn't know how many people were evacuated.

Arsenal advances in FA Cup

updated 2:08 p.m. ET Jan. 29, 2012

LONDON - Arsenal kept its bid to end a seven-year trophy drought on track Sunday, scoring three times in eight second-half minutes to beat Aston Villa 3-2 and reach the fifth round of the FA Cup.

Villa led 2-0 at halftime on goals by Richard Dunne and Darren Bent, prompting near silence from Arsenal fans still waiting for a trophy to follow the 2005 FA Cup.

The home side got back in the game with Robin van Persie's 54th-minute penalty, tied it on Theo Walcott's lucky rebound and took the lead in the 61st on a second spot kick from Van Persie.

Middlesbrough and Sunderland will replay on Feb. 7 for the right to face Arsenal after drawing their fourth-round match 1-1.

Having avoided a fourth straight defeat, the Gunners are now just three games away from a Wembley final.

"We tried to keep focused and calm," Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger said. "It is an opportunity but you could see today how hard the games are."

Arsenal great Thierry Henry missed a late chance after coming on in the 89th for the third appearance of his loan from the New York Red Bulls of MLS, but home fans could still cheer the result.

Robbie Keane, on-loan from the Los Angeles Galaxy, provided the cross that led to Dunne's 33rd-minute opener.

Second-tier Middlesbrough led against its local rival when Barry Robson capitalized on some weak defending to smash a 16th-minute volley across goalkeeper Simon Mignolet and in at the far post.

Sunderland manager Martin O'Neill introduced striker Fraizer Campbell at halftime for his first appearance since August 2010, and the former Manchester United trainee stroked in a low shot 14 minutes later following a mistake by Robson.

Campbell had not played for the first team for 500 days because of knee injuries.

Crawley Town, the lowest-ranked side left in this season's FA Cup, was handed a meeting with Premier League club Stoke in Sunday's fifth-round draw.

Liverpool will meet Brighton, Chelsea will host Birmingham, Norwich will host Leicester, Everton will play Blackpool or Sheffield Wednesday, and Bolton will go to the winner of the replay between Millwall and Southampton. Tottenham is at Stevenage.

BARCELONA, Spain (AP) ? David Zurutuza lasted only five minutes, but it was long enough to score a double in Real Sociedad's 5-1 rout of visiting Sporting Gijon in the Spanish league.

The 25-year-old midfielder volleyed Antoine Griezmann's cross into the left corner for Sociedad's second-minute opener, and a minute later he scored with another shot from the right side of the area after Carlos Vela had played him clear.

But Zurutuza's dream start took an ugly turn in the fifth minute when he and Sporting defender Gregory Arnolin collided face-to-face while disputing a loose ball.

Granada coach Abel Resino got off to a winning start as his team moved out of the relegation zone with a 2-1 win at Real Betis, while Getafe dealt Levante its second home loss of the season with a 2-1 win.

Later, Racing Santander hosts third-place Valencia while Sevilla is at Malaga. Atletico Madrid visits Osasuna on Monday.

On Saturday, Real Madrid moved seven points clear at the top of table with a 3-1 win over last-place Zaragoza and Barcelona's 0-0 draw at Villarreal.

___

ROME (AP) ? Inter Milan's seven-match winning streak in the Italian league was broken with a 1-0 loss at Lecce, which allowed Lazio to jump ahead of the Nerazzurri into fourth place.

Uruguayan midfielder Guillermo Giacomazzi scored in the 40th minute for Lecce and Inter had two goals called back for offside.

Inter was one win away from matching the club-record winning streak.

Massimo Oddo provided the pass for Giacomazzi, who used his chest to control the ball and slotted a low shot past goalkeeper Julio Cesar as defenders Lucio and Walter Samuel failed to intervene.

"We came up against a goalkeeper in great form, while we continually grew more nervous," Inter coach Claudio Ranieri said.

It was Lecce's first home win of the season and only its fourth overall.

Lazio won 3-0 at Chievo Verona with a first-half goal from Brazilian playmaker Hernanes and two strikes in the final minutes from veteran Germany striker Miroslav Klose.

Juventus, which edged Udinese 2-1 Saturday, leads Serie A with 44 points. AC Milan, which was hosting Cagliari later, is next with 40, followed by Udinese (38), Lazio (36) and Inter (35).

Elsewhere, Roma drew 1-1 at home with Bologna to stay sixth. Roma's 21-year-old midfielder Miralem Pjanic equalized with a splendid free kick in the 62nd minute after Bologna captain Marco Di Vaio had scored six minutes earlier.

Also, Genoa beat Napoli 3-2 with two goals from Rodrigo Palacio and one from newly signed Alberto Gilardino to get some revenge for a 6-1 loss to Napoli last month that cost Alberto Malesani his job.

In Sicily, Palermo beat last-place Novara 2-0, with Fabrizio Miccoli setting up two headers from Igor Budan; and Atalanta hung on with 10 men for a 1-0 win at Cesena following an own goal from Marco Rossi.

Fiorentina moved into the top half of the table with a 2-1 win over Siena in a Tuscan derby.

Stevan Jovetic put Fiorentina in front with a low shot four minutes in and Cesare Natali doubled the lead with a header in the 63rd before Emanuele Calaio pulled one back for Siena with a penalty in the 88th.

Making his debut after transferring from Juventus, Brazilian-born Italy forward Amauri had several chances for Fiorentina but couldn't find the target in his first action since the end of last season.

___

PARIS (AP) ? Ten-man Ajaccio moved out of the French league's relegation zone by defeating Valenciennes 2-1, its fourth straight victory.

The visitors were down to 10 men in the 73rd when midfielder Paul Lasne was sent off for a second yellow card, but substitute Christian Kinkela scored the winner in stoppage time by curling a shot into the top corner.

Also Sunday, Bordeaux goalkeeper Cedric Carrasso fouled Yannick Sagbo but saved the subsequent penalty to salvage a 0-0 draw against Evian.

___

AMSTERDAM (AP) ? Luuk de Jong scored three goals as FC Twente beat FC Groningen 4-1 and moved into second place in the Dutch league.

De Jong headed Twente into the lead in the 14th, converted another cross from Ola John in the 23rd and completed his hat trick in the 58th with another header ? again set up by John.

De Jong then provided the cross headed in by midfielder Leroy Fer in the 66th.

Twente has 39 points, two behind new leader PSV Eindhoven, which beat Vitesse Arnhem 3-1 Friday. AZ Alkmaar lost 2-0 at Roda JC to drop to third.

John Guidetti also got a hat trick to guide Feyenoord to a 4-2 win over Ajax.

___

GLASGOW, Scotland (AP) ? Celtic reached the final of Scotland's League Cup for the 29th time with a 3-1 win over Falkirk.

The teams were tied 1-1 until the 56th minute after 17-year-old Falkirk midfielder Jay Fulton equalized Celtic captain Scott Brown's penalty.

Striker Anthony Stokes put Celtic back in front with a 25-yard free kick and tapped Gary Hooper's pass in the 86th to settle the match.

Celtic will meet Kilmarnock in the final at Hampden Park on March 18. Celtic's 14 tournament wins is second only to Rangers' 27.

___

BERLIN (AP) ? Mainz scored three goals in the first 17 minutes to beat 10-man Freiburg 3-1 and climb to 12th in the Bundesliga.

Stuttgart was scheduled to host Borussia Moenchengladbach later Sunday, with the visitors hoping to stay within a point of the top three.

(AP) ? The Security Council began closed-door negotiations Friday on a new Arab-European draft resolution aimed at resolving the crisis in Syria, but Russia's envoy said he could not back the current language as it stands.

Ambassador Vitaly Churkin told reporters afterward that the text introduced by new Arab Security Council member Morocco has "red lines" for Moscow, but he's willing to "engage" with the resolution's sponsors.

Churkin said those lines include any indication of sanctions, including an arms embargo. "We need to concentrate on establishing political dialogue," he said.

British Ambassador Mark Lyall Grant later insisted that the text based on the Arab League's recent recommendations for Syria contains no mention of an arms embargo or any other sanctions, and that it received broad support from other council members. "A lot of straw men are being put up," he said.

"We want, as do the Arabs, an unanimous resolution," Lyall Grant said. "Frankly, the time has come where we should be supporting the Arab League efforts."

The U.N. says at least 5,400 people have been killed in a monthslong Syrian government crackdown on civilian protests.

European diplomats have been meeting this week with diplomats from Arab countries, including Morocco and Qatar, on a resolution that would strongly back an Arab League bid to end the crisis.

French Ambassador Gerard Araud told reporters he expected that a "very determined negotiation process" on the text would start at the ambassador level on Wednesday, one day after the Arab League secretary-general and Qatar's prime minister brief the council on the situation in Syria.

"There is now a chance that the Security Council will finally take a clear stand on Syria. That is long overdue," German Foreign Minister Guido Westerwelle said Friday at the General Affairs Council in Brussels. The comments were provided by the German mission to journalists at the U.N.

"We hope now that council members will seize this new window of opportunity and find common ground," German Ambassador Peter Wittig said before the council met behind closed doors.

But, as Churkin indicated, eventual approval is far from guaranteed.

Permanent council members Russia and China used their veto powers last fall to block an earlier European resolution on Syria. On Friday, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Gennady Gatilov was quoted by the ITAR-Tass news agency as saying Moscow will oppose the new draft U.N. resolution on Syria because it fails to take Kremlin's concerns into account.

South African Ambassador Baso Sangqu said it was important that supporters of the resolution assure other countries, including his, that the draft was not a plan for regime change.

Russia and some other countries believe NATO misused last year's Security Council's resolutions on Libya as a pretext for regime change in that nation.

Syria's U.N. Ambassador Bashar Ja'afari expressed his country's opposition to the new draft resolution saying that "Syria will not be Libya."

Russia has been a strong ally of Syria since Soviet times, when the country was led by the president's father Hafez Assad, and has long supplied Syria with aircraft, missiles, tanks and other modern weapons.

The new Arab-European draft resolution on Syria, obtained by The Associated Press, expresses support of the Arab League's Jan. 22 decision "to facilitate a political transition leading to a democratic, plural political system."

The draft does not explicitly mention sanctions, but calls for the adoption of unspecified "further measures, in consultation with the League of Arab States," if Syria does not comply within 15 days.

The draft also condemns the "continued widespread and gross violations of human rights and fundamental freedoms by the Syrian authorities" and demands that the Syrian government immediately stop all human rights violations.

The Arab League earlier this month sent observers to Syria, but the mission was widely criticized for failing to stop the violence. Gulf states led by Saudi Arabia pulled out of the mission Tuesday, asking the Security Council to intervene because the Syrian government has not halted its crackdown.

The head of Arab League observers in Syria said in a statement that violence in the country has spiked over the past few days. Sudanese Gen. Mohammed Ahmed al-Dabi said the cities of Homs, Hama and Idlib have all witnessed a "very high escalation" in violence since Tuesday.

Obama Discusses Details From His Energy Agenda

The Obama administration released more details Thursday about the energy plan he previewed at the State of the Union this week. He announced an oil-and-gas-lease sale on nearly 38 million acres in the Gulf of Mexico ? and proposals for new incentives to increase the use of natural gas in heavy trucks and buses.

MELISSA BLOCK, HOST:

President Obama was in Nevada today, promoting his efforts to increase oil and gas production.

PRESIDENT BARACK OBAMA: Today, I'm announcing that my administration will soon open up around 38 million acres in the Gulf of Mexico for additional exploration and development, which could result in a lot more production of domestic energy.

BLOCK: NPR's Elizabeth Shogren reports that the president's new petroleum push is unpopular with environmentalists and Republicans.

ELIZABETH SHOGREN, BYLINE: President Obama is starting off the New Year by reshaping himself into a champion, not just of clean energy, but of fossil fuels, too.

OBAMA: For decades, Americans have been talking about - how do we decrease our dependence on foreign oil? Well, my administration has actually begun to do something about it.

SHOGREN: Oil production is up and Americans are using less gasoline. As a result, America is importing less foreign oil than it has for 16 years. The chairman of the House Natural Resources Committee says that's no thanks to President Obama.

REPRESENTATIVE DOC HASTINGS: He has done nothing about it. His rhetoric sounds that way, but in fact, that is not the case.

SHOGREN: Republican Doc Hastings says policies of previous presidents boosted oil production. Hastings says President Obama has stood in the way. For example, he cancelled lease sales in Utah and slowed offshore drilling after the BP spill.

Energy analyst Kevin Book says the president's renewed focus on petroleum shows he gets how crucial the industry is for the future.

KEVIN BOOK: The message that energy production creates jobs has been internalized at the highest level of government.

SHOGREN: And yet, Book says the proposals the president is trumpeting aren't really new. For instance, the lease sale announced today was originally planned by the Bush Administration. In the State of the Union, the president said more offshore leases are on the way in the next five years in the Gulf of Mexico and off Alaska.

Environmentalists say the plan is too aggressive. Frances Beinecke, the executive director of the Natural Resources Defense Council, was on Obama's national commission on the BP spill.

FRANCES BEINECKE: The oil and gas industry is not investing in the safeguards that are required to ensure that spills don't occur.

SHOGREN: The president's new energy push isn't all about oil. He's calling for more homegrown production of natural gas and clean renewable power, too.

Moderate caffeine intake associated with higher level for Asians, lower for whites

Asian women who consumed an average of 200 milligrams or more of caffeine a daythe equivalent of roughly two cups of coffeehad elevated estrogen levels when compared to women who consumed less, according to a study of reproductive age women by researchers at the National Institutes of Health and other institutions.

However, white women who consumed 200 milligrams or more of caffeine a day had slightly lower estrogen levels than women who consumed less. Black women who consumed 200 milligrams or more of caffeine a day were found to have elevated estrogen levels, but this result was not statistically significant.

Total caffeine intake was calculated from any of the following sources: coffee, black tea, green tea, and caffeinated soda.

Findings differed slightly when the source of caffeine was considered singly. Consuming 200 milligrams or more of caffeine from coffee mirrored the findings for overall caffeine consumption, with Asians having elevated estrogen levels, whites having lower estrogen levels, and the results for blacks not statistically significant. However, consumption of more than one cup each day of caffeinated soda or green tea was associated with a higher estrogen level in Asians, whites, and blacks.

The changes in estrogen levels among the women who took part in the study did not appear to affect ovulation. Studies conducted in animals had suggested that caffeine might interfere with ovulation.

The study was published online in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition.

"The results indicate that caffeine consumption among women of child-bearing age influences estrogen levels," said Enrique Schisterman, Ph.D., of the Division of Epidemiology, Statistics and Prevention Research at the Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NICHD), the NIH institute where some of the research was conducted. "Short term, these variations in estrogen levels among different groups do not appear to have any pronounced effects. We know that variations in estrogen level are associated with such disorders as endometriosis, osteoporosis, and endometrial, breast, and ovarian cancers. Because long term caffeine consumption has the potential to influence estrogen levels over a long period of time, it makes sense to take caffeine consumption into account when designing studies to understand these disorders."

The study authors noted that 89 percent of U.S. women from 18-34 years of age consume the caffeine equivalent of 1.5 to two cups of coffee a day.

The study's first author was Karen C. Schliep, Ph. D., M.S.P.H., from the University of Utah, Salt Lake City, who conducted the study during a research appointment at NICHD. Dr. Schliep undertook the research with Dr. Schisterman and colleagues at the University of Utah, the NICHD and the State University of New York at Buffalo.

More than 250 women from 18 to 44 years old participated in the study between 2005 and 2007. On average, they consumed 90 milligrams of caffeine a day, approximately equivalent to one cup of caffeinated coffee.

Most of the participants in the study reported to the study clinic one to three times a week for two menstrual cycles. Their visits were scheduled to correspond with specific stages of the menstrual cycle. At the visits, the women reported what they had eaten in the last 24 hours and answered questions about their exercise, sleep, smoking and other aspects of their lifestyle and reproductive hormone levels were measured in blood. The study authors noted that collection of these details during multiple time points across two menstrual cycles produced more precise information about the link between caffeine and hormones than was possible in earlier studies. The researchers also noted that the study participants were more racially diverse than those who took part in previous studies.

Business Headlines: Super Bowl Ad Preview; Apple Dominates ...

Volkswagen's "Bark Side" Super Bowl ad (Photo courtesy: Volkswagen)

Volkswagen?s ?Bark Side? Super Bowl ad (Photo courtesy: Volkswagen)

BOSTON (CBS) ? Volkswagen is trying to get a jump on the competition in the Super Bowl ad war.

They?ve already released a teaser trailer for their new spot called ?The Bark Side.?

It features dogs singing Darth Vader?s theme from Star Wars.

It already has 8-million hits on YouTube.

Last year, Volkswagen had a major hit with their ?little Darth Vader? commercial.

With ads going for $3.5 million for a 30-second spot, advertisers are looking to make the most of every dollar.

And ad execs tell me showing off ads before the big game actually makes people more receptive to them when they finally see them.

2011 HOME SALES

The final numbers are in and home sales in Massachusetts last year hit their lowest levels since 1990.

They come despite low interest rates and home prices that dropped 3-percent for the year.

Still, real estate trackers say it could have been worse, and given the improving jobs picture, we could start to see a slow and steady recovery.

APPLE DOMINATES

No slowdown for Apple though.

They have more than doubled their profits for their first quarter.

Apple sold more than 37-million iPhones and nearly 15 million iPads.

It?s the first earnings report since the death of Steve Jobs and it looks like the company has transitioned pretty well.

Roe v. Wade Hits 39, but Republicans Still Hate Women's Rights (ContributorNetwork)

COMMENTARY | Today marks 39 years since the landmark Roe v. Wade decision was handed down by the U.S. Supreme Court. NARAL, the largest and oldest organization dedicated to protecting the rights of American women, says that in the last year it has had to combat more attacks on these rights than ever before, according to the Washington Post. If the women's-rights-hating republican candidates have their way it won't last much past year 40.

Ron Paul's campaign site clearly states he is a "life begins at conception" candidate. He would pass a "Sanctity of Life Act," making his belief law, given the chance. It makes me wonder if his "life is sacred" stance would apply to death row inmates as well. It also makes me wonder, since Paul is a gynecologist, if he is aware that such a measure would outlaw many current forms of birth control, such as "the pill."

Rick Santorum's site takes it further. Santorum wants to make sure you have a hard time getting your health insurer to cough up a referral for an abortion, much less pay for one. Health insurers are known for their altruism and commitment to patients before profits -- oh, wait, no they aren't. They're for-profit entities and could well use Santorum's legislation to find another way to avoid paying for patient care so they can fatten their profit margins.

Newt Gingrich's site says he will defund Planned Parenthood. He also wants to ensure medical and insurance personnel can place their personal views ahead of contractual obligations to female patients. I guess he doesn't care about the health of lower-income women.

Mitt Romney's site is silent on this issue. True to form he has flip-flopped on the matter from pro-choice to pro-life, according to NPR.

If you are pro-choice and want to see Roe v. Wade survive past the 2013 inauguration your best bet is to vote for Obama. The right-wing candidates have promised to abort your right to choose. These misogynistic men should never be given the chance to legislate women's freedom away.
